why am I getting sick while playing HL2 ?

Good grief, I play FPS all of the time but man-o-man do I get sick/nauseous while playing this great game...

I just played the level where I get the little speed boat and I'm going all around the toxic/water riverbed and wow do I feel bad right now

plus it happens quite a lot throughout the game for me...

sounds like a case of motion sickness to me, could be the large open area maps that not many fps have. most are set in confined areas where you dont get the same effect of motion.

THis has been discussed before, a lot of people are getting the same symptoms. people are trying to find a way to turn off gun sway. Take some motion sickness meds and have at it 😀

Check your refresh rate too. Usually you can press a button on your monitor and get some info. If you see something like "60Hz" you need to up it. (right click desktop, properties, settings, advanced, monitor).

turn vsync on.

What is that and what does it do?

It limits your framerate to the refreash rate of your monitor. For me at least it looks a lot smoother. Every time your screen flashes, you get another frame from the game.

And your refreash rate is VERY important. set it to 85 hz (or above). If it doesn't support that high i recommend the 3 step process.

1. Unplug the monitor

2. Throw it in the garbage

3. Buy a new one.

Same here. I've been an avid FPS gamer all the way back to Wolfenstein 3D and I've never experienced motion sickness in any FPS until HL2. I don't know what it is about it, but I can't play for more than an hour or so at a time.

I've tried with vsync both on and off, the visual tearing from vsync off has never bothered me in any FPS game in the past. I run 60hz on a 2001FP LCD so it's definitely not a flickering issue. Framerate in game averages a steady 50-60 with dips into the 40s.

Nothing that would indicate to me why I would be experiencing motion sickness. But out of every FPS I've ever played, this is the first.

I got a bit sick too (felt bloated), I thought it was because of the food I ate (pizza few minutes before) but it happened right after the speed boat part. After seeing all these people also getting sick I guess it was HL2. 🙂

I got the same motion sickness when I started Metroid Prime. Never could find a cure. Anyone interested in a barely used platinum gamecube?

(my monitor is a 22") OK, I up'ed my refresh rate to 85hz (was 60) so where is the "vsync" adjustment located...its hiding from me 🙂

Under video options, Advanced. Its the bottom right drop down menu.

I can't seem to find it...I'm using an ATi Radeon X800p so if someone can tell me where its hiding it would be greatly appreciated 😀

I've messed withit before but I cxan't find it NOW!!!

Vsync for me

Thanks ArmchairAthlete increasing my refresh rate to 85 really helped out a lot so would it be alright to go up one more tick with my refresh rate without having to think I might hurt my system somehow?

Also Ne0 to go there do I go through this way?

display properties\settings\advanced\then select a certainTAB

this is how I am going about it, am I doing it right?

Thanks guys,
CA

The option for VSync is in the HL2 Video Option, click on Advanced in the lower right hand corner.

Options on the main menu. Then Video Tab & the advanced button under adjust brightness.

I don't usually have this motion sickness either, until I played Halo 2 on XBOX... and it's not like I have an option with refresh rate or vsync. I found that the 57" wide screen was a problem... I switched it to normal letterbox mode and it helped a bit. I think the theory about the "large open area" maps is correct...

(I don't play HL2 so I don't know how it would affect me)

Been reading about this on the stream forums. Looks like its related to people getting tunnel vision while playing. Some reason its the Point of View setting of 75 in Half life 2. Where Counter strike is set to 90. People have been reporting changing the setting helps alot, in the console. Im too lazy to go look it up tho =P
