why all the hate to SUV's and not pickup trucks?

they are the same vehicle, just as big and get just as bad millage. but all i see are people bashing suv's. Maybe its a west thing where i see just as many trucks used as daily commuters as i do SUV's

I am going to guess and say because a lot of the people that have SUV's don't necessarily need them. I would say that more people use trucks to move large things they can't in an SUV.

I was surprised to see it when I moved out here (LA area), coming from upstate NY, where people actually used their trucks to haul stuff around.

Pickup trucks usually have a function. I want to buy a truck right now just to haul lumber and work on some house projects. Using it as a daily driver wouldn't be my first choice, but it's slightly less obnoxious because you can actually see around it. In traffic, an SUV totally blocks the view of what's going on up ahead....

ok i get it now. people with trucks are excused from the bashing because someday they "might" need to move something that is too large to fit in a SUV.

common dude, get real i had a pickup and the only time i needed the haul something big was when i bought my fridge. other than that i didnt use it to haul anything.

The ratio of people I know and see that drive trucks and are using them regularly in ways that cannot be accomplished with an econ car is much more favorable than those who own SUVs. The amount of people I see driving SUVs to and from work everyday without anything in the vehicle but themselves is disgusting. I am ok with those who have huge families that travel together a lot or perhaps even use their SUVs for purposes outside of work on a very regular basis which cannot be achieved with an econ car. However, we all know that there are shit tons of people where that case does not apply.

Hmm maybe it was a Ram. As much as the naming was made up, I did actually see a Dodge that was a Texas Edition, which is what I based that name off of. But I don't think it's the biggest pick-up truck that I've seen. I see some really obnoxious ones around here (stock, not raised or anything like that).

SUV's have a function as well, just not the function you need. and to tell you the truth seeing around a pickup and a suv is just about the same and a lot better than being behind a semi.

That's the problem. How do you or anyone else assess, on a busy road or otherwise, whether or not a driver needs a certain vehicle. Furthermore, who defines the word "need", you or the driver?

Texas edition? I'm familiar with a Ford F-150 New England edition, and the Ford King Ranch edition... Dodge has the SRT-10 or something with the Viper engine and a spoiler... never seen a Texas edition. That Viper engine Dodge with a spoiler is definitely ludicrous though.

Edit: Okay, evidently Texas Edition is a popular idea, I've just never seen the ads (surprise surprise) up here.

No one is debating the functionality of an SUV. Most of the debate is centered around how often that function is used. For example, let's say you use an SUV for a purpose which would be impossible to accomplish with a mid sized econ car once every 3 months. Think about the money you would save in gas if you just decided to rent an SUV for that purpose in gas alone or if you paid to have said item(s) delivered? Not to mention that maintenance when it comes to wear and tear on an SUV is more expensive. It's a win/win situation for everyone.

Who F*'in cares how much the function is used. Geezus, it's not your decision. If I buy a vehicle for a purpose that is used 4 times a year and I can pony up the money for it, why the F should you care? Why do you let yourself get so worked up with what someone else buys?

I hate giant trucks just as much as giant SUVs. But I live in Texas, where 50% of the vehicles on the road are giant trucks, so I might be biased.

And yes, most of the trucks here are driven by suburbanites who rarely haul anything more than groceries.

It's not even so much about size of the items, it's more about convenience. It was easier to toss a muddy mountain bike in the back of a truck that it was to lug it into a wagon or slap it up on the roof rack of a car. It was easier (and cheaper) to get truck bed full of mulch and haul it around the yard than it was to buy dozens of bags of mulch and get it all over the inside of a wagon. I can't haul 4x8 sheets of plywood with a wagon or most vans easily. When it comes to deer hunting it's a lot easier to hose out the back end of a truck bed than it is to line the back of a wagon or a car and hope you don't get blood everywhere.

That being said, I did get rid of my truck last November while the resale was still quite favorable. I needed something a little more family friendly and was able to save about $40-$50 a month in gas with something that got 25MPG average vs. 17-18MPG.

Convenience has a price, how much that is worth to some people is a very different figure.

I drive an 07 Nissan Frontier. I get about 23-24 miles to the gallon. But, I have helped move two family members and three friends. When I'm not helping people move, I only drive it to work which is only 6 miles away. I have to fill my tank every three weeks, so I don't think I'm am being ecologically unfriendly.
