Here are some reasons why Alaska sucks and by extension, why any politician from Alaska shouldn't be trusted to be a fiscal conservative:

While this isn't a hit-piece on Palin necessarily, I certainly believe that if you want more borrow and spend Republican budget bullshit, McCain-Palin is your ticket.

Have a link for that crap??

Isn't Alaska the state that gives everyone who lives there a check from oil revenue?

I'm curious how she will rebut these points, which will undoubtedly line the statements Biden makes during a nationally televised debate. Palin and McCain tell bold-faced lies daily about the governor's record in speeches across America; it's comforting to see the press finally take them to task on it. Palin is no fiscal conservative any more than Bush is. Her job as governor of Alaska was to leech record amounts of per capita federal funding while their state was awash with oil profits.

    Drip...drip...drip...

Uh as your article noted a lot of that money spent up there is royalties paid to the residents of the state of Alaska for extracting oil from their land. Now I would like to read the entire article and see if it breaks it down into oil revenues.

Also being a large state with a rough terrain. Federal highway expenditures are sure high.

Either way this has little to do with Palin as your numbers are from 2005, before Palins time, and under a Democrat gov.

I am not even sure how in your mind you connected tax and spend republican bullshit with this article.

That said somebody else pointed out how the feds is actually bending the state Alaska over a barrel per the terms of their agreement. I dont have the article and maybe somebody can provide it. Basically the money sent back to the state for oil royalties so far has been half what the agreement said. The feds have made billions above what they are supposed to.

So the 'taxes per resident' claim is not based on how much each person is actually taxed, but on how much tax revenue they get from oil divided by the number of residents in the state??

    Kind of a convoluted statement.

    nice link
    ALASKA
    Sales Taxes
State Sales Tax: The state currently does not have a sales and use tax. However, some jurisdictions impose local sales taxes that range up to 7%. Anchorage does not have a sales tax.
    Gasoline Tax: 8 cents/gallon
    Diesel Fuel Tax: 8 cents/gallon
    Cigarette Tax: $2.00/pack of 20 (Anchorage - add $1.32)

    Personal Income Taxes
    No state income tax
    Retirement Income: Not taxed.

No sales tax and no income tax!!!
    Let's compare that to Illinois.

State Sales Tax: 6.25% (1% on qualifying food, prescription & non-prescription drugs, medical appliances). Local government taxes can raise the total to a high of 8.5%.

Income Tax Rate Range: Flat rate of 3% of federal adjusted gross income

    Which state is taxed more?

the idea that some states get to get away with having no income tax and/or no sales tax while leaching off the rest of us who are getting slammed by taxes really makes me want to kick an Alaskan in the nuts.

    According to the Time article;

Palin was actually for a windfall profits tax for Alaska...before she was against it for the rest of the United States?

    Am I reading that right?

Lol...nice intro to a "news" article... "Sarah Palin thinks she is a better American than you because she comes from a small town, and a superior human being because she isn't a journalist and never lived in Washington and likes to watch her kids play hockey." The least they could do was to label this as an opinion/editorial piece...is that asking too much? Media bias....say it isn't so !!!

The larger more unpopulated states will always have a number that can be skewed.

Realize that the US also leeches off of Alaska. It is Alaska's wealth & natural resources that are being taken from them and in return they get higher fuel prices that is not even from their own raw crude. It was their shorelines that are damaged so the rest of the US can have oil.

You have military bases up there.
Much of Alaska is Federal government land.

It also costs more to live up there.

That's why I didn't quote any of the non-relevant parts of the article. The parts that interested me were the facts and figures. Feel free to dispute those - if you can.

I think the original poster has it dead wrong, and PJ is correct. I reached the same conclusion as PJ a few days ago as a result of studying Alaska'f finances in more depth because of Palin.

My conclusion, like PJ, is that Alaska is essentially an OPEC member that is also a welfare state. No income tax, no sales tax and tons and tons of handouts from the Feds? Give me a break. The galling thing about it is so many Alaskans are like Palin, bogus "fiscal conservatives" who are better at feeding at the public trough then the welfare mothers they profess to despise. Hypocrites.
