I have an MSI K7T Pro 2A motherboard that sorta conked out. Went completely dead, no beeps no boot nada. Pulled board and with video only still wouldn't boot. Discharged the bios and replaced the jumper and bang, up it came. Reboot back to nada. The board booted with a checksum error. Replaced the battery with a new one but same thing. The board has to be discharged to default in order to restart. I figure it must be a bad bois chip, Award, as it happens. Anybody got any other thoughts. I don't kow where to buy the chip and am not sure it's really worth doing so, but curious if there's something I don't know.

Hey Moonbeam, doesn't one always get a check sum error after clearing the CMOS? Maybe I'm not understanding the problem.

I use to have a link to a company that sold bios chip replacements. I'll try to find it and post back.

EDIT: link to BIOS Recovery link

Cuz the date ain't set.. but, if he goes in and set it and all is well then goes on to windows.. maybe windows overwrites the bios and when he shuts down the bios has been corrupted. (assumes not a battery issue) So he tries to start.. but it won't even POST.. so he clears the garbage and he can then run on default settings.. means that the bios is getting over written AFTER he's gone in and set it up correctly.. Me thinks..

Fern, I don't know if a reset produces a checksum error. Maybe it does. Seems like the bios doesn't hold changes even with a new battery and the clock set but doesn't default to safe settings either. Only a discharge restores those settings. Seems strange and contradictory. Thanks for the link. I saw the board on ebay for cheeper than the bios chip. :D Maybe I'll ger a cheapy at frys.
