I recently started to consolitdate computers in my house.
One of steps was to combine the WHS server and my XBMC machine.

Everything works perfectly fine EXCEPT it seems that WHS can not properply install the IR receiver for the remote control.

Right now I'm stuck using a wireless KB to control XBMC (it stinks). I can not find a IR that will work, or a work around or any alternative.

Does anyone, by the grace of God, have any suggestions as to how to get the IR Reicever to work?

IR Remote in question:

I bought a generic USB IR remote off of amazon.com for $9. It's not an MCE remote, but it was totally plug-n-play, no drivers required in XP.
I don't have the link handy off hand though.

I wonder if it would work.
From what I can google around, the problem is that everything is Vista/Win7 compatibile.... and WHS is "XP compatible"... if you find lnk let me know.

You can also virtualize Windows Home Server inside of your media box. I've virtualized WHS using Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 inside of XP a couple of times with good results. There are some tricks since Virtual Server is a bit different than Virtual PC or Hyper-V, but it definitely can work.

Obviously, though, a working remote control would be a lot simpler....

I thought of this, but the IR would still have to be recognized by the Virtualized WHS install. XP would see it fine, but the WHS would still not know what it is.

If WHS needs to see it from inside a virtual machine then, no, that's likely not going to work. I assumed that only XBMC would need to see the remote, and that XBMC would be running on the host machine (XP, for instance), where it could see physical hardware.
