WHS v1 system extremely slow

I have left my WHS filled all the way up with only 100GB (out of 12TB) of storage left, and it finally crashed/locked up. I then added another 2TB drive but the system is extremely slow whenever I remote desktop it.

The console takes forever to show up, and any application I start takes 1-2 minutes to boot. The task manager always shows 60-80% CPU usage from the system. File serving works fine and is plenty fast, but the server is totally unusable when I want to run other services like iTunes, air video, handbrake or downloads.

Any idea what might be wrong with the system or am I looking for reinstall?

Did you upgrade the CPU or memory?

You haven't upgraded to v2?

Can you please check SMART status for your drives. When I had issues it was because my system drive was dying.

This is for WHSv1 with the latest patches applied. I haven't upgraded anything in years. I checked all the drives and they all appear to be healthy, and the system drive is a SSD (unlikely to fail).

Is WHS2011 worth upgrading? (in case I need to reinstall?).

WHS2011 does not have drive extender but there are third parties that have made plugins for it. Personally I am on v2 and I will not upgrade. Once something happens to my server, or I run out of space, I am moving to a new NAS setup (non WHS).

Does WHS2011 support 3TB drives out of the box? I have too many 500GB/1TB drives I'd like to consolidate into a few nice 3TB drives.
