WHS Setup Issues

I have WHS setup on an older box, using a wireless connection for now because I don't feel like running more cables yet. I can access the shares on it, move data back and forth, but when I try to run the connector software it just says "The operation was unable to be completed at this time".

Any ideas? I've looked for documentation that might indicate what's going on, no luck. I was thinking I had shutoff a service on my desktop that is causing it, but no clue.

It's possible it's a firewall issue on the server, but that's an odd issue to say the least. Are you able to access it via Remote Desktop at all?

I honestly haven't tried, like I said I can access the folders through file sharing, I can ping it, but can't access the console for it. I've got a few other boxes I have yet to try from though, I suppose I should do that first before deciding what's going on.

Have you installed PP1 on the server? I'm having the same issue--the connector software won't connect for backups to the server, but I can see it and everything else. I have disabled Windows Firewall on all the systems, but there were a lot of changes to the network so I'm not sure what the reason is.

My home WHS setup is working beautifully, but something changed to make the one here flake out.

If you updated to PP1, did you also update the connector software? It has to be updated too

Windows Firewall isn't the issue

I haven't gone to PP1 yet, although it made me re-install .NET framework 2.0, which I already had on here, so I'm suspicious about that. I'll install PP1, try from another computer, and go from there.

Edit:

After PP1 and reboot, I can't even get to the password screen now, just searches then says it can't complete the operation.

Edit 2:

Can't access from another PC either, although I turned on websites and it seems to work.

So I can access it from outside my router, but not from inside :(...weak. It flashes something about downloading from my server then goes to the failure screen.

Weird, very weird.:Q

I'm not sure you're going to be able to get the help you need here, you may want to try Microsoft's own WHS forum.

In your OP, you said that you are running wireless--are you running the WHS box off of wireless? Or just the other machines? Also, do you have data already on the server? If not, I would first try to do a repair off of the server CD, and if that didn't work, I'd try a reinstall.

That is very strange. The only thing that sticks out to me is that you're running your server on wireless. I know whs isn't supposed to support wireless, but your issues sure would be a strange manifestation of that.
Have you tried it on a wired connection?

Yes, the WHS is on wireless, which I've considered a possibility. I'm severely lacking in CAT5 cables right now though, but this weekend I'll be able to test on wired to see how it goes. As is right now I'm able to connect from all 3 of my other computers to the shares and remote access so I'm happy.

Ahhh. I'm guessing that is the problem then. I have noticed that WHS is very finicky about things like that. Also, don't move or mess with the WHS related folders in the 'Software' folder. Apparently that's what caused problems in my WHS box at work.

I don't know why or what problem it manifests, but MS has consistently stated that WHS MUST be connected to the switch/router with a wired connection.

Well it's connected via wired now, not directly to the router though. It's hooked up to an 8-port switch in the other room, that runs into a single port on the router here. Still no go, gives me the same error.
