I have been having issues with my Pentium 4 WHS, it keeps shutting down etc. Just now on my desktop a message pops uup saying my Maxtor hd has failed and to replace it. It is my main hard drive in the WHS that my OS was installed to. Can i just buy a new hard drive and put it in there and all will be well?

Edit: I pulled the good sata drive out and hooked it up in my desktop and it shows to be a data drive with half space full, but when I open the drive to view files it shows to be empty

No matter what you have to buy a new Drive and install Fresh OS.

If there is data files in the data partition of the old drive you can copy them to the new drives (WHS stores the data in regular format).

However if the data gone from the Maxtor there is Nothing that you can do about it (unless you want to play with recovery application and try your luck).

Possibly corruption of the file system on the disk. It's possible it's a logical problem and not a physical problem with the disk.

I'd replace the disk, run WHS' System Recovery mode, and let WHS rebuild itself. WHS will scan the other disks and create new tombstones for the files on those disks.

Shared data files that are only on the "broken" disk will need to be recovered (if possible) from the "bad" disk if you don't have backups.

I recently had the virtual disk on my virtualized (Hyper-V) go bad on me. It'd been disconnected from the server for months and when I hooked it back up, WHS booted, but minutes later started giving error messages and then rebooted itself twice and never came back up.

A quick look at the disk and the virtual drive showed problems with the Data partition on the WHS virtual hard drive, maybe similar to your problem.

I restored my WHS from backups to a different hard drive and later took a look at the "bad" disk and the virtual disk inside it. When I examined the virtual disk, Windows reported an error and offered to fix it. After the "fix", both the System and Data partitions on the disk appeared normal.

You might also try one or more of the various free and paid data recovery programs to see what they can discover.

Was the good drive acting as a mirror/folder duplication drive?

You might be able to potentially image it then restore to a new drive, though depending on the damage I would not really trust this. Best to take the image BEFORE it goes bad. ;)
