WHS appears to be blocking connections

Hi all,

I have a home make WHS server running very few add-ins or other modifications. A couple months ago I bought a USB WiFi N dongle to improve the speed of wireless to my laptop which only has built-in G. It worked great for a time, but then stopped connecting to my WHS. I couldn't see it or ping it by IP. I had access to everything else on my network. I can print to my network printer, and have access to the internet. I know the card is the issue because when I remove it and use the built-in card it works. I also tried pinging the laptop from the WHS console and also times out.

Fast forward to now, and I have 3 Western Digital Live+ media streamers. One of them is unable to see the server. Unfortunately, it relies on broadcasts to see the shares, there is no way to configure a media source for them, either it finds them or it doesn't. I remembered the problem I have with my wireless card and went to the server console and sure enough, I can't ping the WDTV. The WDTV has internet access and I can get to Netflix and other sources just fine.

With the exception of my wireless card, all these devices are hard-wired via a Netgear GS748T managed gigabit switch. My router is a smoothwall with a single internal subnet. I cannot see how anything but the server is at issue, but I've not been aware how 2003 could block MAC addresses from even pinging it - especially automatically, but that appears to be what's happening.

Any ideas?
