Hi,

I just wonder if anyone has heard any rumours of when Windows Home Server 2010 is to be released? Anything later than Q3 sounds late if they still want to call it WHS 2010, or?

Ok, so based on that do you think it's likely there won't be any WHS 2010, but instead a WHS 2011 or maybe even WHS 2012?

I'm not in on the loop at all. But there's been no general Beta yet, nor (of course) RC. Microsoft isn't even discussing new features yet.

I'd put it at 50/50 that the release will be in 2011. Either way, the release wouldn't be before Fall of 2010. But this is all just a guess on my part.

My personal position is that if One really needs a NAS/Server there is No point to wait for Godot when a current OEM OS is $99.

FWIW, if you currently install WHS on a computer that its CPU is x64 capable there probably would be ways to Install the New version of WHS and copy the data to a new installation.

And there's always the question:

Do you want to use the initial release of ANY new software?

Especially if it's going to hold all your data.

Those are all valid points. Still, since the current WHS is based on a 7 year old OS (Windows Server 2003), one feels that it's really time for a new release. You might argue that as long as the current version of WHS does what it's supposed to, there is no need for an upgrade. But still, 7 years is a long time and I bet there are a lot of improvements that are present in later versions of the Windows code base. If they don't release the next WHS version until 2011, and you have to wait 1-2 years after that to be certain that any stability issues have been sorted out, we will be sitting with an almost 10 year old OS before actually upgrading to the next WHS release!

ALL of my business clients are still using XP and Server 2003. Combined with WHS for making ongoing backups of the desktop PCs, they make a reliable system that will work with pretty much any hardware and software out there.

WHS is currently the best NAS peer-to-peer server solution, and that what counts.

But hey, what I say probably does not count because I was born in the previous century.

I am even older than WHS (or anything related to computers for this matters).
