WHR-HP-G54 $41.50 shipped with GCO

How does it compare with the Linksys WRT54G v2.2? It isn't working out for me so I've been hunting around for better wireless routers.

Im using a Dlink di-524. But if you search the board everyone loves these 2 buffalo routers and this is the better one with a much longer range than standard routers. You can also flash it with dd-wrt firmware. Hopefully someone with one chimes in here for more specifics on it or ill let you know when mine gets here.

I have one, great wireless range, all the functionality of the Linksys with the Linux firmware and whatnot as I understand

Definitely a great router. I have 2 of them running on WDS. I never had more stability on wireless, been through with NetGear, D-Link and LinkSys. Just one of the best routers I ever had, for that price, I want to buy another one. lol

I got one of these recently and it is a very nice router w/ dd-wrt firmware. You have very little chance of bricking it in a firmware flash, as the only way to flash it with DD-wrt is the same method you would use to recover from a bad flash (not the web GUI). I had one problem where sometimes i would not be able to connect to websites/etc, but found out that i was being limited by the router's maximum connections setting which i easily changed w/ the dd-wrt firmware, and it has been running solid ever since (up time: 20 days)

I can't say enough good things about these routers. The Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 is what the Linksys WRT54GS should have become. It offers all those great abilities that we first went "Ooh and Ahh" about when the first Open Source firmwares were released for the WRT54G's, and that were later updated, and so much more! The built in amplifier of the WHR-HP-G54 is what sets it apart from the WHR-G54S in performance. It allows better range and signal quality (at the greater range and through obstacles), while both perform great at shorter ranges.

I have bought 5 of these routers in the past 2 months, and plan to purchase 3 more before the year's end. I absolutely love them!

Anyone using one of these at 1000+ feet? My buddy owns a shop 1000ft from his house and we have spent many hours and $$$ trying to get a wireless signal down there.
His ISP charges $70 a month for service and a $300 setup fee.(Small Microwave wireless provider to modem only) So he doesnt want to have to get 2 accounts.

Thanks, OP! I've ordered one.

Has anyone found any modestly priced [$10-$30] antennas that are worthwhile replacements for the std antenna on this? I've an aluminum-sided, long-ish house (65'), with my router at one extreme so it's 55', 1.5 floors and 3+ walls to another computer that's currently getting a weak signal. Unfortunately, it's also hell to run wires from the router location to my basement (and then to that far end) without using an outside run (yuck), so I'm trying wireless. I'd like a better signal at that remote computer, and maybe even outdoors. The basic WLE-AT-NDRHB is only about $11 and advertises "up to 150% increase"... for what an ad's worth.

I'm not finding much in the way of reviews on such antennas, so if anyone has experience it would help. 'Guess I'd better find a forum on antennas....!

You might want to try WDS setup, only bad thing about WDS is that you have to use regular keys, no WPA

Yes, but from what I've read DD-WRT supports WPA over WDS. I bought 2 of these routers from buy.com last week to replace my Linksys WRT54G bridge setup which has given me nothing but trouble. So far, these have been very good. I have not tried DD-WRT yet, but the stock firmware is so-so (has this "easy setup" mode which actually makes things more difficult in my opinion)

I've heard great things about Buffalo routers - but for now I'm satisfied with my Netgear MR814 v2's 99.99% uptime 😉
