How can you accurately judge Samuel L Jackson as an actor when you admit yourself that you've not seen much of his work? You don't know who you're talking to. I know a sh!tload about movies but I don't see anything special about Samuel L. Jackson except what Tarantino can make him. He sucked in Shaft, Jurassic Park, Star Wars Episode I, II (and probably III when it comes out) and Deep Blue Sea. The only things I remotely liked him in besides Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown. Rules of Engagment was fair but I think I liked that because of Tommy Lee Jones.
