presently Sprint.
I am moving to Nextel. Sprint doesnt have coverage in Central CA a place I frequent very often.

If you do get a phone get a dual/triple band just for the sake of the times you do run into emergencies.

Also love my Nokia 6190, I wonder if the 8290 is any good?

Nextel is digital, but it's proprietary (Motorola IDEN is the name of the technology).

Pretty decent quality for me, although they can have a few problems indoors. Also, the coverage area isn't nearly as good as Sprint but it's growing.

cool. just wondering, because we had a cellular phone for a while a couple years ago, and it was incredible how nasty the quality was, static really bad. switched to sprint pcs and was amazed at how clear the calls really are. even clearer than my regular home telephone, it took some getting used to because people sounded a little bit different in their voices when its digitzed. :)

I'm in Canada.

I use Clearnet, which was recently bought by Telus.

500 minutes (anytime of the day)
all incoming calls (anytime of the day)
voicemail, caller ID, visual call waiting
no contract

$50/mo. (canadian)

How does that compare to US rates?

Well considering CAD 50 = USD 33 today I would say that's an average deal, you're not getting ripped off. However since you're not getting that many minutes or free evening/weekend minutes then I hope that your 500 minutes come with:

1) You can call anywhere in Canada without paying long distance? If not then that's not a good thing unless if you only need to make local calls.
2) Can you roam anywhere in Canada?

Otherwise CAD 50 for 500 minutes is only so-so.

rossMAN,

the attractive part of this plan is that all incoming calls are free (or included--however you want to look at it).

With the same company, I could get 300 minutes + weekends/evenings for the same money. But then you are limited to 300 minutes during the day.

I am a student, and I use this as my primary phone. There are not many people that I can't ask to "call me back". So the unlimited incoming calls is great. (for me)

1) Long distance is not included in this plan.
2) Roaming: I can make calls while roaming anywhere in Canada with no additional charge. Incoming calls outside of my home area have long distance associated with them. Is that what you mean? In Canada, I believe that all carriers allow you to make calls while roaming anywhere in Canada with no extra charges.

If you're saying the entire incoming call is free, you receive a lot of incoming calls and people know that it's to call you whenever they want then yeah you got a good plan.

Here in the United States most people have a PCS (Personal Communications Service?) and a common perk is the first incoming minute is free. You'd be amazed at how much info you can rattle off in just 60 seconds and the call is free :)

with my Nextel plan, all incoming calls are free until December. Of course, Nextel is pretty expensive. I pay $80/month for 500 minutes (but those only apply to outgoing calls). But I also get unlimited use of the two-way radio feature (which is great for work use) and the internet access, text paging, etc.

I had GTE wireless -> now AT&T wireless in San Diego. They made a good deal Free Nokia 6160 phone, Free service for six months (250mins anytime, 1000 offpeak) and then a 6 month contract at $30/month (same minutes). In addition to free phone, they gave free car adapter, free belt clip, free leather case, free extra battery. The plan includes free long distance w/in California, no roaming charges/fees anywhere in California, Nevada, parts of Arizona, New Mexico etc.

Cingular Wireless. My complaint with them is that so far, I've received two bill statements. So far, I've received two incorrect bills that rang up big bucks for calls that were supposed to be free. :|

Same here. My bill was about $900, called them and got it back to 29.
