Good question. You wouldn't think it would be too difficult, especially on the translucent models. Surprised they don't have some sort of add on, besides the worm lights. I wouldn't want to experiment on mine, but I'm sure someone is trying it.

there is a thing that you can put on it, it magnifies it as well as lights it. better that worm light from what i've heard.

thats the reason I didn't buy a GBA. the old Sega game gear had a much better screen.

I wonder if you could cannibalize a gamegear's backlight to work on a GBA...they can be had cheap on ebay. I bet it'd be a challenge though, short of an EE degree

I don't think the GBA screen can be lit from behind.
I found the website Portable Monopoly, where they're working on this.
The original idea was to replace the screen, but that would be too expensive.
Then they figured on lighting from the edges, but the existing screens don't reflect from such low angles.
Now the guy is looking into a special reflection system that bounces low-angle light straight down onto the screen. Depending on the cost, that'll probably be the best solution.

Full spectrum betalumination isn't too difficult. Of course, you need to be NRC licensed to (legally) obtain and handle raw light sources.

Cheers!

ign.com has an article out today on how to unofficially adjust the contrast on your GBA. Interesting, but I haven't tried it yet. It's one of those 'at your own risk' things, of course. Involves a hidden POTS (screw) under the back label. GBA Contrast Control?
