Who's up for a three-day race? (PrimeGrid, finished 26th; 34th/yr)

The year has almost come full circle, and so we have on PrimeGrid projects as well! PrimeGrid's last challenge of the year starts on Friday, December 18, and the project is the same as in the first challenge I recruited you for, AP26.

AP26 is PrimeGrid's most versatile project. It can run on a 32-bit OS, but does particularly well with 64 bits. It can run on Windows, Linux, Mac OSX (Intel or PowerPC), PS3, and now...nVidia video cards! To join the challenge, once in PrimeGrid, just check your PrimeGrid preferences and make sure that, in Projects, only "AP26 Search" has a Yes next to it. If you want to use the CUDA app, make sure you have BOINC 6.10 or later, and that "Use NVIDIA GPU if present" has a Yes next to it.

It's the last race of the year, so it's the last chance to improve our standings. Right now we're tied with a team Goobee..so let's see if we can smush them! ;)

P.S. Team Goobee seems to be where our old friend and TeAmmate Polo wound up, albeit not on PrimeGrid, so we won't be smushing him. :) If you don't remember Paul-Eric, I dug up his last thread here.

I just passed 500K in Yoyo@Home so I'll go ahead and switch my machines over to PrimeGrid for a few days. :)

Welcome, FD! Long time no see! :)

That (Yoyo@Home) looks like an interesting project. Or rather a few interesting non-BOINC projects wrapped in BOINC. Do you get your own credit on those projects, or is it wrapped in a Yoyo@Home account too?

P.S. My goodness, that's a lot of machines! You're going to make a huge difference in our rank!

P.P.S. Only one hour to go!

Edit: A reminder for those new to PrimeGrid racing: Only WUs downloaded after the start of the race and flushed before the end of the race count. So if you have any PrimeGrid WUs now, abort them when the race starts; and don't forget to flush before it ends!

i pulled out my old tablet with the flaky gpu. I'll see how much a Pentium M 1.7 adds to my output.

Hi, Ken! I've been around, I just don't post very much.

I honestly don't know if they score points for the separate projects as well as for the Yoyo BOINC "wrapper". I was just trying to get Yoyo@home to 500K for the Free-DC milestone stats.

I'm not sure if I will be able to force all of my computers to flush their work and grab new stuff since I really don't have direct access to most of them. I just have the BoincStats Manager tell them which projects to attach to, and that frequently takes 24 hours or more to kick in. If that's a problem, just don't count me for the race and I'll let my computers do the work anyway. ;)

OK, if you can't access your computers, just keep your queue levels low, and hopefully they'll flush close to on time.

@waffleironhead, My PM 1.5 does a little over 1.5 hours/WU. :)

Notice that team just under us? Yeah, that's the team to beat if we want to advance in the standings. Go TeAm! :)

Welcome to new TeAm member Wang Chung, by the skin of whose teeth we're ahead of the bees. :)

Still nothing from Fardringle. :( FD, you say you don't have access to most of your machines. Do you have access to any (such as the one you type from)? Even one more machine would be a great help. Just suspend all other projects, abort any WUs downloaded before the race start (10 minutes after your last post) and we should start seeing results.

We need more power. I installed wubi on my 2nd 2.4ghz quad just after the race started so I have 2 64bit quads running ap26

Thanks for the updated stats Ken_g6

We got more power - mostly thanks to SlangNRox! I only have one quad, besides three other cores, but I've OC'ed it to 3.2GHz, which is why you're just barely beating me. ;)

Hopefully, some of FD's computers will start reporting work from within the race time soon. And I'm also expecting work from chronodekar soon. But other teams are probably recruiting too, so don't let up!

The good news is that Fardringle is finally showing up! :) And that SlangNRox added more machines.

The bad news is that the bees are back. Also, chronodekar hasn't shown up yet. He was running some long WUs that I thought would be done soon, but maybe he's not running his machine 24 hours?

Welcome to Sofa King! If he posts here too, I think this will officially be yet another old-timer thread! ^_^

It looks like we've settled into 26th place. Hopefully as more of Fardringle's computers report WUs from the race (and/or as more old-timers join :p) we'll be able to keep ahead of the bees and Picard. Maybe if some new people join too we can catch Italy before they get away? :sneaky:

 It seems my table was running the whole night doing absolutely nothing. boinc was paused because it thought the system was doing something. One check box later and it was firing along fine.

thanks for the stats Ken!

Fardringle's coming on strong! :) We might even have a chance of catching Italy!

I have a strong suspicion that I'm going to wind up 3rd in an AP26 race again. But I've won the last couple, so it's good to see the competition's improving. :)

The big surprise this morning is that kimmyl has passed waffleironhead! Greg, did you forget to turn something on again? :$

The other surprise, to me, is that Fardringle hasn't passed me. I doubt we can pass Italy until he does.

In the team race, we're still at 26th between Italy and Picard. We seem to be maintaining our lead on Picard, but Italy is getting away. So let's get after them!

P.S. If we don't pass Italy, [H]ard|OCP is going to pass us in net points!

eh, my wife was up late with the little one and inadvertently shut the system off before coming to bed. Of all the nights for that to happen... Oh well.

EDIT: I brought some more power online, well see if I can catch up to kimmyl.

It looks like the internet connection was out all day at the office where most of my computers "live" but it seems to be working OK now. I should (hopefully) have some more results to turn in soon.

Also, I found this nice little note at the bottom of my stats page (note the "Hits" column): :)

The surprise for this update is Calm Chaos, who have come out of nowhere to nearly catch us! Seems they recently added a member who's "running cuda application on a 250 and a 260 card also running 16 cpu cores of varios types". So we'll need all the cores we can get to stay ahead of them!

Fortunately, Fardringle is going strong, kimmyl seems to have picked up the pace, and even waffleironhead is over 10K now. It seems like I caught these stats on the cusp of big changes: I'm about to pass 30K and the TeAm looks like we're about to pass Italy. Or is Italy just playing possum?

Will Fardringle catch me? Will we catch Italy, or will Calm Chaos catch us? Are there any more surprises in store? Will waffleironhead be able to keep his computers on all night? :p Tune in tomorrow for the exciting conclusion of the Winter Solstice Challenge!

Edit: P.S. Remember that the race only counts WUs completed before the end. So don't forget to flush before it ends!

Congratulations to all on finishing 26th! :) We couldn't have done it without each and every person who posted in this thread, plus kimmyl.

I believe we got enough points from our 26th place finish (7.5) to pass BOINC Synergy in the overall rankings, with 35 points for the year. (They finished 36th and didn't get any points from this race.) However, I believe [H]ard|OCP got enough points out of this race (12) to pass us in the overall rankings, with 36 points for the year. So we finish the year remaining at 34th place overall. :)

So the surprise for this final update is...there is no surprise. The more things change, the more they stay the same. The TeAm didn't move from the last update, nobody changed rankings, and we stay in the same position for the year too.

It could have been worse - the bees, who we were tied with before this race, finished 29th. With only 3 more points, they couldn't avoid getting passed by both us and [H]ard|OCP. Without enough points to pass BOINC Synergy, they wind up in 37th place!

And at least for this race, I'm not finishing third. As you can clearly see from my avatar, I'm number two! ;)

It was a fun race and it got me to install a 64bit os on one of my machines. Downloaded, installed and had boinc running in around 45 minutes.

I"ll repeat what Ken_g6 said and it really took everyone to get 26th place. Just think of what we could've done with even more help.
