yes, only they cant pitch.
the bullpen is a one man show.
the rotation???
Ortiz and Ramirez will be a big reason why the end up winning around 90 games.
the pitching will be why they dont win many(or anymore) than that.

Wasn't he slated to be a starter? Are their any plans to make him a starter next season or has he inherited the closer role by default for the foreseeable future?

well Foulke washed up, so now its Papelbon or no one.Hansen hasnt shown anything yet, and the rest? lol.
At this point, i dont know the Redsox pitching woes can even be addressed in one offseason.

varitek. he knows the pitchers well, and he knows what they have and what they can do. ever since he's gone down with the injury they've had to rely on one catcher who spent more than half of the season with another team and another catcher who previously catched exclusively one pitcher and wasnt even there for spring training because he too was on another team. varitek is the capitan and with good reason, he's always alert and aware of whats going on in the game. now with varitek on the dl they are forced to make do with what they have. sure tek can make calls from the bench but its just not the same.

edit: of course you cant always blame tek for being injured, sh*t happens. but my theory is that once the captain of the team is out, you lose some of that cohesiveness.

When Varitek comes back, the young pitchers will gain confidence and pitch better. It might be too late at that point, but Red sox still have some hope if Varitek comes back faster than expected.

The injuries, IMO. The Sox let go of Arroyo because they didn't really 'need' him (with Schilling, Beckett, Clement, Wells, and Wakefield), but 3 of those 5 have been injured for much of the year. Then, of course, there's Jason Varitek, who has already been mentioned. The season is still saveable, though, especially if Schilling pitches well tonight and gives the Sox some kind of confidence.

that and the fact that Pena only hits the long ball when we do not need it.

Theo had his chances to get better pitching, but he did not want to let go of peopel like Declerman. It doesn't make sense, really. He trades Soppach and Hanely, but does not want to let go of his other non prospering rookies. i do not get him.

I'm only a casual fan of baseball, but I'd say it was the fact the Red Sox made no moves at the trade deadline to improve the team, and the Yankee's did.

So...Theo I guess..

Hasn't papelbon blown 5 out of 17 saves?

That isn't really very good. Hopefully this ends the "Papelbon > Rivera" nonsense.

Blame the Yankees. After all, if they only had to go up against the Blue Jays, Orioles and Devil Rays every year they wouldn't look quite so pathetic.

It's pitching, simple as that Manny and Ortiz are haveing great seasons
as allready mentioned but how-in-the-hell can you walk 9 batters and
expect to beat the yankee's..Aint gonna happen, Beckett does not have
the confidince he did with the marlins. Johnny Damon is also batting about
.500 since fri. night, killing the sox! some might say steinbrenner overpaid
for him but it doesent look that way now...
