Who is really still putting out a great AV application now? It seems like some of the top players are starting to fall by the side... :(

NOD32 v3 is really bad!

I've heard some negatives over Kaspersky's latest version, but maybe it was just rumors...

Bitdefender had great reviews last year...

G DATA how are they?

What's happening now with AV apps?

THANKS

AVG is ok, but it's never had as good of detections as Nod32 or Kaspersky...

I run McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise 8.0 on my rigs ... Thru my brother's work.
They allow employees to use it on personal pcs .. Has perpetual license.
I did use AVG Pro for a bit .. I needed it to find and remove a Dialer Trojan that
had gotten past Norton, but that was about 3 years or so back.

It's free, so that's a perk already, and do you really download so much BAD stuff that you are worried?

Avira's AntiVir Personal Edition Classic is also free and has a superior detection rate to aVast and AVG Free Edition.

Lets not forget the high false detection rates as well by some of the well known AVs,good online test here Note: page 14 of their On-demand comparative August 2007 Report.

I guess you can argue there's really no king of AV since it depends on what you want out of it.

Well NOD32 and KAV has always been in the top ranks, some I'd consider right up there for King status. ;)

Stick with v2.7 ;)

The CHKDSK (slow to start is all) issue and object ID's catch a lot of flack. In the grand scheme of things they are trivial IMO. If you can look past those two issues then you've got one of the best AV/Suite's on the market.

Bitdefender had great reviews last year...
Absolutely. However the 2008 GUI is terrible, but it runs light and has respectable scan times.

G DATA how are they?
Not very popular in the US. GDAV 2008 uses the Kaspersky and Avast! engines, and their business version uses F-Prot instead of Kaspersky. GData stopped using the Bitdefender engine in its 2006 version. It's considered a resource hog.

What's happening now with AV apps?

THANKS
Spend some time on Wilders and you'll keep up with the latest malware trends. :)

How so? I think it's fantastic. Much better interface than 2.x and still the most lightweight AV engine I've ever seen.

Many problems, better to look on Wilders to see all the issues...

Well I have NOD32 v2.70.39 and KAV 7, so it's been a toss up at this point between them...

Do you have them both installed? I am trying to decide on either NOD32 2.7 or KAV 7 as well. Is KAV really a resource hog like some people say ? Why haven't KAV fixed the slow internet speed problem ?

There are those that have great results with NOD32's 3.0 version, but as DasFox points ourt there are still many who are experiencing issues. ESET is working on it, but I still stick with version 2.7 until then.

DasFox, I read that link but I am pretty ignorant as to what was being driven at. Could you explain in laymen's terms what you saw that made you take KAV out and reformat your drive?

And does KAV 6 cause tyhe same issues as KAV 7?

I took KAV out and reformatted my drive after reading this:

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=1153969

I'm not taking any chances...
1) How often do you actually run chkdsk? The answer should be "rarely", and if it's not then you have other issues to resolve.
2) Object id's are no big deal, and the MFT issue is blown out of proportion.
3) Regardless of the app there are people that will claim "it's a resource hog". While you cannot judge an app on task mgr. memory usage alone (there is also kernel level usage), KAV should have little impact on system performance. I run KAV6 on old Win98SE boxes with Celeron 300MHz & 128MB ram.

The fact of the matter is that Kaspersky sets the standard for others AV's to follow. While it's not perfect, it's by far one of the best AV/Suites on the market and should not be avoided due to trivial issues that do not affect a majority of the users.

I best part of taking KAV7 off of my pc totally is I don't have to reformat to do that! :)

I refuse to even try NOD32 3.0 because its horrible. NOD32 2.7 is the only version I will try though I am keeping KAV for now because its one of the top and has proven itself many times.
