... at AnandTech who slobbered thermal compound all around the core in this picture? And who let this picture be posted on the web site? I would be embarassed to say I applied the thermal compound to that CPU... a monkey could have done a neater job of it...

What a mess!

to me that picture looks like it was taken after the heatsink was removed hence the mess and hence the thermal compound found on the paddings on the processor... no one would be dumb enough to put compound on the pads and i know from experience it only happens AFTER you remove the heatsink...

If you apply thermal compound according to instructions, it's completely impossible to get that much crap all over the processor.

*EDIT* I follow AS3 instructions, and when I remove the heatsink, there's not even any goop quished over the sides of the core onto the substrate... if there is, you put too much on, simple as that.

That picture looks like the tube exploded and it went everywhere, and they were so excited to test the XP2800 that they just said "screw it" and went ahead with the testing without bothering to clean it up.

Good chance the excess goop squeezed out and poured over? And while removing the HSF, brushed against the pads?

I never put that much goop on my core for that much to pour out. But thats the only logical explaination behind it.

That may be a logical explanation, but it's a stupid mistake to publish on a website seen all over the world.

I still more partial to the dude who tried to cut his heatspreader off with a jigsaw or something similarly stupid. God I wish I would find those pics again. Quite a sight.

According to Arctic Silver 3 instructions... only a thin film of compound is necessary... and with a heatsink lapped to almost a mirror smooth finish, just a transparent haze is enough. Any more than that, which squishes out and sits next to the core of the processor prevents proper cooling by holding heat next to it.

Afterall... you are only trying to fill near microscopic valleys... not gouges in the surface of the heatsink or CPU core.

maybe he forgot to write "this is how NOT to apply thermal grease"
i doubt it, but he could use that as an excuse heh ;)

if you apply it as per the instructions that most ppl will give ya, you apply a VERY thin layer to the core (plastic bag works best ive found) and then smudge a bit on the base of the heatsink and work it around and take off any excess you have....chances are those pads are covered with grease from the bottom of the heatsink when the grease was rubbed into it

The pads aren't what I'm talking about... it's the half a tube of thermal compound smeared all over and around the core... probably all over some of the bridges too...

I used to get freaky with the AS, I've settled down a bit though.. It does look like my work quite some time ago(not since the sub 1G days)

Evidently you guys don't read maximum PC or missed the issue that did show a guy who put AS on the "PADS" and wondered why his athlon fried..
:D
It has happened..heh.

LMAO! :Q
that is the perfect example of way too much.

all you need is enough to color the core ~ it isnt peanut butter :p

Must have fell asleep and their head fell down on the tube and squeezed out all the compound left in the tube.

LOL... like the commercial with the 2 kids at the table eating breakfast, one sets down a jelly donut, the other opens his mouth, then the one kid pounds the donut and squirts the jelly into the kid's mouth.

I usually just stick the tube into the floppy drive and wait for it to start coming back out like the wheel bearings on my boat :).

Where's the keg?
