??? Is it not bad for you? At all???

Lard is pure fat. Fat is a required part of your diet. Fat in excess isn't good for you, but then neither is excessive calories, excessive carbs, and so on. Trans-fats from margarine & shortening are getting the negative press these days.

The best carnitas I've ever made use lard & bacon fat. Oh man:

Fat is way better than sugar any day. I would say it's generally better than carbohydrates, as well. With anything, balance is key, but I think it's fair to say that you are better off overdoing it on fat than you are with carbs or sugar in your diet.

Just eliminate sugar as best you can (especially any kind of refined, non-fruit based nonsense), and you will stop being a fatty.

We were in Germany for a company business trip for my wife. At a business dinner they had one of the appetizers was bread and they said "have some lard with bacon". Yep it was a small container with lard with bacon in it to spread on your bread.

Iron is also a required part of ones diet, but that doesn't mean you should walk around gnawing on a piece of steel. I'm not going to argue things made with bacon fat or lard don't taste better but to justify it (even in small quantities) because "fat" is a dietary requirement is disenginuous at best.

To be specific, the scientists these days usually don't say lard per se is bad for you. They say that having too much lard is bad for you.

Referencing my post above... That looks delicious, and there's nothing wrong with eating that type of food. But if that whole plate is just for yourself in one sitting, on a regular basis, then you have a problem.

As for carbs, I still don't quite get why carbs get such a bad rap in so many fad diets. Ideally, carb calories should represent most of your calories actually. I think the main problem is people just eat way too many calories in general, and need something to blame. Yes, you can lose weight on a low carb diet, if you reduce your overall caloric intake (or increase your caloric usage). You can also lose weight on a high carb diet, similarly if you reduce your overall caloric intake (or increase your caloric usage).

I think it's safe to say too much of anything is bad for you; it's really all about balance. Heck, there are people who die from drinking too much water (water intoxication).

But I don't think stuff like lard is the devil. Would rather have that than margarine at this point haha.

I guess my question is, isn't lard likely worse for you than regular, non-saturated oils like vegetable oils and what not? I get that trans-fats may be even worse, but are the non-saturated oils stilll considered healthier?

Dude, I'm pretty sure you'd die for lack of protein if you went for any truly significant amount of time eating only lard and potatoes lol.

Health science is probably one of the most complicated aspects of science, even more complicated than rocket science. It seems there is no single set yes or no, about what is healthy and what is not. Every study seems to contradict each other.

Some are even starting to think fat is good for you now. I've even heard stuff about cholesterol being good, and fruits being bad (lot of sugar). I just eat everything in moderation... seems you can't stick to one diet or set of advice because another one might contradict it.
