Why would I contact someone? I'm assuming this is good or bad news for me only. If it only involves me, I can't imagine anyone else caring.

If I knew something bad or good was going to happen to someone I knew I'd tell them about it I guess, just in case they didn't already know. Now that I think about it, there's no reason not to assume that they already know, so I might as well not even contact them in that case either.
