I may need to get surgery to have my adenoids/tonsils removed to help me breathe easier at night.

I have to go back to the doctor and find out.
Was it painful?

I have read that having them removed will decrease your immune system when you become elderly, and have a harder time fighting off infections. FWIW

Hmm... I read that they were useless pretty much after the age of 3.

Did you just get them removed recently?
If so, for what reason?

I thought they didn't remove tonsils anymore?

I also read somewhere they can grow back.

I had the same surgery about 8 years ago. My tonsils were very diseased/infected and constantly caused more infections that normal people my age should have. My recovery took about 3-4 days. The adenoids were nothing. Didn't even notice pain from those. The tonsils just led to discomfort in the throat. Broken bones are 1000 times worse. In fact, I feel worse with my head cold right now then I did recovering from the surgery.

My tonsils have been KIA since I was 5. All I remember is the loads of ice cream I got to eat :)
Oh, and having the scabs come off while my family was on vacation. We were on top of a mountain and my dad raced the car down the mountainside to get me to a hospital, almost killing the entire family in the process. What great memories. ;)

Got the tonsils out when I was 4 but I had to get my adanoids out in 2000 because of them blocking 80% of my sinus cavity causing me to have sleep apnea.

If you are over something like 12 it is one very painful surgery. Speaking from experience. :frown:

I was 15 when I had mine taken out. Didn't even have the scabs that the above poster mentioned. Only have it done by a ENT Doctor and you will be much better than just normal outpatient surgery.

I have had them removed when I was 7-9. No anesthesia. Arm and leg straps, instead. Very, incredibly painful. The surgery took about an hour (or it felt that way, if it wasn't actually that long). For a few days I could not swallow my saliva and had to spit it out into a cup. No solid foods for a while.

i had them removed about three years ago (am 27 now) and its definately not worth the trouble at all. someone told em tehre is new laser thingy that is supposed to be better.

i took out my tonsils and uvula (the little hangy thing). it didn't help that much though. i get sick less often and breathe a little better, but still have trouble breathing when i sleep.
