Who's got Verizon FIOS?

I'm having FIOS installed tomorrow. Does Verizon have to install any software on your PC in order to get FIOS? I've previously had cable and DSL, and both Comcast and Verizon wanted to install software on my PC which I declined (self-install), especially since I was running a home LAN with several PCs connecting to the net via a router. No ISP software was needed. I assume FIOS works essentially the same way. True? Or is it different?

Had it installed on Sat. and they did not install anything on my computer. He used his laptop and had me test the connection on my home comp. Welcome to Fios!

They didn't install ayn software on my computers. They'll run a coax line from your ONT that they place on the outside of your house to the location that you want to put the router. You'll have to use their router as well.

There is no software install for FiOS. They may want to put in their own wireless router, though if you know what you are doing you might be able to get away without having to replace your existing router (the guy that did my install said to keep the router around since it had some special software on it that aids in diagnosing problems, so I would have to plug it in if I ever ran into trouble, which I never have). There was a setup web site that I went through once everything was running, but it was basically setting things up like your e-mail username and passwords and such. There was an option at the end to install the MSN software (or maybe it was a choice between a couple of options), which I declined.

no software

they provided me with a new D-Link router. I insisted on using my old LinkSys but the LinkSys was unable to handle the sheer throughput of FIOS so I accepted the D-Link.

in my basement they installed 2 boxes. One is some big box where the fiber optic line goes in and there are outputs for phone, internet and video. Another box houses battery to backup the system

I'm in an apartment and have it. They ran the fiber right to the apartment and then put the big ass ONT box in my linen closet where the conduit with the fiber comes in. Then they ran a coax line to a wireless router in my bedroom and bolted a UPS to the wall inside my closet and ran the plug to the wall socket just outside the door. The dude was all trying to set up the software on my computer but he couldn't get it to download. Turns out you don't need the stupid software. Router does all the work just like cable. Of course he did get the verizon software half installed and now I've got the stupid verizon logo in my IE window instead of the windows one. Kind of annoying, but I use Opera most of the time so it doesn't bother me too much.

If you're getting a new install expect it to take a few hours. No software install on your PC is required. They do want you to use their router, and if you are getting FiosTV their router is required.

I'm having a house built and was planning on getting it pre-wired for fios. Just to confirm, they run fiber to the house but it's coaxial cable inside the house?

Fiber to either the outside of the house or slightly inside to the box (you can have the ONT installed inside or outside). Coax throughout the house.

If you're having a house built, have the electrician run some conduit so you can snake through whatever LV cables you need. It also allows you to upgrade easily in the future.

Their routers use hacked firmwares to support high data speeds. I tried swapping in my old router and it bogged down on 15mb throughput.

I'm just waiting patiently. I keep seeing the damn billboards up all over Albany, yet no one I know of has it. Frickin teasing me like this does NOT make me happy! :)

Anyway, I was looking and thinking about going with the all in one package they have set up. Those of you who have the FIOS TV can you tell me your thoughts on it when compared with your local cable extorter...errr...company?

Don't have it at my current residence, but the only thing I noticed with the TV is that sometimes the cable box is a little slow when switching channels. Otherwise it was just like Cablevision.

Like others said, you do not require a software install for FIOS. The only thing that comes closest to that is their FIOS Optimizer that supposedly tweaks your Windows settings to get optimized speeds. You do this via an Active-X plugin for Internet Explorer. Just Google "FIOS optimizer". Anyway, whatever you do, do not let the FIOS technician setup more than one computer. If you do, then they'll bill you an extra $75 for something minor. What a bunch of wankers they are!

First thing is it's almost $40 cheaper than Cox for the same service. They just changed the media guide yesterday so I'm not sure if I like it or not. Only thing I miss is the page up/down buttons that Fios does not have. Being able to access weather/traffic info while watching ESPN in the morning is a big plus. Like BigJ said the channels do tend to change a little slower but it's not a prob for me.

my parents have it, but NONE of the comptuers/laptops pick up the wireless signal from that router unles you are within the same room...the signal sucks too much~ so they went back to their regular Linksys router which means that there was no point to get ti :p

I'd be calling the Verizon ppl up and bitch about that. They demand that you use their router, but if it doesn't fit into your needs, then why have it?

Either that for find a hack for that router that'll boost it up to the recommended speed.

How about just connecting your wireless router to their router?

Because that makes sense... duh.

I'm with Time Warner/formerly Adelphia in Southern California and i'm interested in FIOS, is it really all its cracked up to be? What makes it better than just repackaged and glorified cable?
