Anyone get an Athlon 64 yet? How's the performance? Looking for some real world opinions from someone who is actually running one.

I was considering putting together a new system with a P4 2.8c and attempting to OC it. Now I am kinda wishy washy on that after reading the reviews on the Athlon 64 which seem to be pretty positive. I'm a bit concerned that if I go with a 64 that I may be sorry I did after the next round of chips come out based on info that the PGA is supposed to change a bit. I don't want to be screwed if I decide to upgrade later.

Kinda lame...Not that juicy...I am sure NFS4 will do it right....

Coupe of things...

1) He really can't ever say he feels the increase except in gaming, but even downplays that...I think most ppl coming from a 3.0c or 3.2c may not get the full boost of an A64 at the default 2ghz....

2) He thinks he will get 10% from tweaking the bios!!! I have never seen 10% from just tweaking the bios from default settings. He would have many things set wrong. OC it to 2.2ghz plus and then maybe he will see 10% but not likely then as it (CPUs) usually don't scale like that...

Someone do a Real review in here please.....

I'll try my best. I'll do some benches of my overclocked 2.4C before I switch over to my new rig. It just shipped today :D

NFS4, any chance you could run a SETI benchmark with the "standard" work unit? I've made it as easy as possible, here's a kit with instructions: SETIBench.zip

The SETI client has to be downloaded from Berkeley (a link is provided to the download page) and you want the i386-winnt-cmdline.exe version. This should be right up the Athlon 64's alley, but the dual-DDR P4's are good at it too. A sub-2-hour time would be very nice :D

If my setup gets here by Thursday, I'll try to get the benches done by Thurs night. If it gets here Friday, it's gonna have to wait til Sunday night. Haven't seen my GF in 3 weeks so we've got a lot of catching up to do :p

Cool :) The SETIBench makes a good overnight benchie, since it just terminates itself and writes a result file that you can examine later, so you could even get the P4 benchmark done whenever you want.

There's also the WinZip/UT benchie that I described here:

Do you have time to do a WinZip compression benchmark for us? I'd like to hear how it does :D Here's the standard one that I do:

  • Defrag system drive
  • Make a new folder on the system drive, and copy the contents of Unreal Tournament (original) Disc 1 into the folder
  • Defragment drive again
  • Reboot to clear the data from the system's cache
  • Right-click the folder and choose WinZip > Add to Zip File
  • Choose Maximum (slowest) compression and begin timing when you click the Add button
  • Halt timing when the progress bar disappears

For reference, this sounds like it would depend a lot on your hard drive, but it really doesn't. The result varies a lot with the CPU/mobo/memory setup. On my AthlonXP 1700+ @ stock speed, I typically got times around 3m 25sec.
If you do this on your current rig, that would be interesting to hear how it goes. So far I've only gotten a vague "2 1/2 minutes" from a dual-channel Intel owner, so a more-precise response would be nice. This assumes you've got the original Unreal Tournament (not UT2003).

I don't have UT :) Only game I play is BF1942 and soon to be LOMAC and HL2:D

GF lovin is more important...Bench things like winzip or winrar, FH work units, any mpeg2 encoding program, besweet or lame mp3 encoder...

Heh....good one :)

Glad to see this thread start to get some replies. I think that with what ever system I get I'll see a big improvement (currently running 1.4 T-bird with 1GB ram). After doing some more reading though I am leaning towards the A64 for a couple reasons. First is that although it is slight, the performance is a bit better than current high end P4s (I know that's debatable depending on what you read and who wrote it). The second thing is that since the current line of P4s while a good value, are at the end of their life cycle and I would have few upgrade options in the long run. Even though the Athlon 64 is more expensive currently, it should give a few more upgrade options (for a while at least).

I have a feeling when I get some extra money I'm going to have the urge to buy an Athlon-64... hopefully the 939 pin version won't come out before christmas, or nobody's getting a christmas present from me, lol.

OK, here's the SETI time I got on my current rig on the first pass:

2 hours 22 minutes 58 seconds

My Athlon64 processor/motherboard are sitting in a Greensboro, NC Airborne sort facility right now so it will be delivered today. I still may not be able to get benches done today though. Probably not til Sunday night.

Was that your overclocked 2.4C? What speed was it overclocked to?
