I'm jumping onto Verizon soon and ditching Sprint so this is a perfect time to get one of these babies... anyone have opinions on them ? Do they function well as both ? Or are they too bulky / heavy / etc. ?

my friend has the Samsung PDA-phone...the new sprint color one w/ the PALM os.

bleh, i dont like it....too awkward to use as a phone personally, works good as a normal palm tho, i just feel like a freak carrying it around and talking on it like a cell phone.

I've got the Nokia 3650. Amazing phone with more features than I could ever handle. I rarely use any of the PDA functions of it though, unless I'm taking a quick note of something.

Unless you have a specialized app you can't bear to apart from, I suggest you skip those true Palm or Microsoft PDAs with phones built-in. More PITA than it's worth. Too big, heavy, clunky interface compared to just a traditional cell phone, buggy as hell. I actually had my old Kyocera Palm based phone crash when I needed to dial 911 one time. Fortunately, it wasn't a life threatening experience.

If you need some mobile or PDA-like functions, try something like the Nokia 3650 or Ericsson T610.

When I switched providers, I too was looking at getting a new phone. I looked at some of cell/PDA phones but just thought that they were too bulky. I figured that, anywhere I go that would require me having my PDA would probably someplace where it wouldn't be awkward carrying a Palm pilot around. However, there are plenty of places where it's nice having the phone, but I don't need the PDA. In the end, I reminded myself that I was getting a phone, not a personal organizer.

That same thought kept me from getting one with the camera/video recording stuff.

I ended up getting the Nokia 6610.

I disagree, I think they (Samsung SPH-I300 and SPH-I330) rock. I've only used it in the store, but I'm looking at buying one. It's small, well-designed, and useful as a Palm Pilot. I haven't found a better combo unit for any of the other providers, and that includes the Handsprint Treo 270/300. The keyboard on those is nice but I like the interface and everything else about the Samsung units better.

I use my Palm heavily so having a combo unit would be great for me, the only downside is then I'd be stuck with Sprint. Sprint's all I've ever used, but I think Verizon in my area is better. There just aren't any good phone/PDA products for them though. :(

My dad has a new blackberry that is a phone / PDA. It's big, annoying, and doesn't work well as a phone OR PDA. Just buy a good cell phone and pick up an older PDA cheap.

I already have a Palm VIIx and it sucks to carry 2 units around (when/if I have to). I want a new toy! ;)

KingNothing, the Treo 600 coming in the fall seems to support all service providers.
