Just the fact that you're basically paying for a demo makes me feel weird inside...
But I'll still be getting it.

Exactly,
and barely a demo it is...

Yes..the free demo is basically a demo of the full version, but the full version is only a demo of a minuscule part of the entire game of Spore.
So, I can get the demo of the demo for free, or I can get the demo of part of the game for 10 bucks.
The question comes down to, is it worth paying ten bucks for 400% more content over the free demo? The answer for me is yes, but it doesn't change the fact I'm still paying for a demo.

The character creator comes with the game, correct? Why pay $10 for it just to get it early?

I'm don't intend to buy Spore until they change their DRM scheme from it. Haven't heard anything yet though.
As originally explained, Mass Effect players would need to authenticate the disc and its CD Key on install, and the game's SecuROM DRM software would then need to re-authenticate the game every 10 days in order to check and make sure the CD Key hasn't been banned for becoming public or being used for registering illegal copies.
...
A similar plan for mandatory authentication every 10 days on another anticipated EA PC game, Spore, was also scuttled, according to a statement from the game's producer. Both Mass Effect and Spore will now authenticate whenever users go online to download new content.

The early release of the Creator Creator is great. When the game is released, you'll be able to import your characters and jump right in. You won't have to spend hours creating you creatures.
If you didn't catch the video for the Creator Creator, it's worth a look.

So, who's got it so far? Interesting little device. Not entirely self explanatory, but you do pick up things - like that you have to hold down the mouse button on a color to get non cartoon shades, or that mousewheeling over a part changes it's size.
