systemshock: What in the hell are you talking about? Computing is very much moving into the area of 3D but if you haven't read Tom's review of the P4, he tests the p4's raw floating point (useful in any situation) against the Thunderbird's raw floating point and the Thunderbird 1.2 Ghz destroys the p4 1.5 Ghz. A lot of little programs, legacy programs or old games DO NOT take advantage of any software optimizations so it would be better to have an athlon JUST for the raw FPU performance because in all those little places, the athlon is just faster. I was a little dissapointed in Anand's review of the p4 because of many reasons:
1) For some reason, it seems like they're trying to cover up their review of the p4 (you wouldn't want to show how crappy intel really is because you might get people like you who say they're biased). The way they did this is by releasing TWO articles within about 16 hours (which hasn't happened in who knows how long) which would kind of cover up the news that the p4 sucks and the 1.2 Ghz Tbird still owns.
2) The article released right after the p4's review says, "With the Athlon running hotter than ever..." WTF is this bs!? Did my Athlon just start running hotter because it's just that time of the year? Did athlons across the world unite in some furtive conspiracy to "run hotter than ever" all of the sudden? I think they put this phrase there to make those uncertain Intel fans like you (systemshock) to feel happier that they own an intel chip and therefore Anand makes their "customers" feel happier because they feel like they're in a "more intel" environment.
3) In the p4 article conclusion it says, "The Pentium 4 will thrive as its clock speed increases, unfortunately for Intel it seems like the Athlon may be able to compete..." WTF is that $h!+? The athlon obviously already kicks the p4s ass in performance, value and you don't have to basically build a new computer to be able to use it. I don't know how many Intel freaks are still out there but I think Anand is a little biased in hope that he'll get more "customers." Let's hope this is the reason.
(btw, I couldn't use bold or italics or anything because I'm using Opera 4.02 and it causes Opera to lock up when I hit any of those buttons so if any Anandtech people are reading this, look into the source if you can =]).
