Duh-duh-duh?

ever heard of a hard court, clay court, or grass court?

yes i have....

Federer's got 4 different types of courts to play on....Tiger has i dunno 50 or so...

They are both great...but Tiger is more dominant...in his sport...

Golf is golf. Tiger doesn't have to adjust his game according to the people he plays with. In tennis you'll have guys who serve 140mph and rush to the net afterward, and those who live on the baselines, and those who play in between. He has to study his opponents' games, their styles, and adjust according to the court.

Federer made the finals of the french, which pete sampras never did. Has Tiger ever won 3 majors and been 2nd in the 4th in the same year? Not sure. True, Federer doesn't have the roger slam, yet... but he has dominated men's tennis more than anyone I know of in history, whereas Tiger and Jack were about equal in dominance. We need a Graf vs Sorenstam poll too, that would be a tough one.

Tiger won all four majors in a row (Tiger Slam) three in one year and the Masters the following spring

And? He still didn't do it the same year. Federer made it to the finals of 6 straight majors and won 5 of them.

Tough one, but I would have to go with Tiger, though my vote may change if Federer keeps playing like he has been for much longer.

regardless of which is a more difficult sport, the question is who is the most dominant in their respective sports...and that is clearly federer.

Comparing golf to tennis is a difficult comparison. Being able to consistently dominate individuals in a match play environment (Federer) is not nearly as difficult as consistently dominating 155 players in a stroke play environment (Woods)

I just don't buy this reasoning. In golf your opponents can't directly impact your performance. It's really just you vs the course. Tennis is sport that requires you to actually compete directly 1 on 1 with your opponent. It's a tough comparison, but I just don't see how golf is so much more difficult to dominate.

Other players don't affect golfers? Whatever. Golf is the most mentally challenging game out there. In tennis if you hit the net on serve you get a "do over". In the PGA, there are no mulligans on a drive. You bet your ass that if you are in the lead by a stroke or two and somebody behind you is making a major run it IS going to weigh heavy on your mind and affect youre game.

In golf, your opponents dont affect your play as much as it does in tennis.

Pretty simple to me. In tennis your playing 1 person, and you rarely face anyone really talented until the quarter finals and up, so to win you have to beat a few sub-par players then maybe 3 very talented players individually.

In golf you have to shoot 4 consecutive rounds better than 155 guys, 25-30 of which are very talented.

But in golf how your opponent swings does not affect how you swing! In tennis, your opponent can force you to a shot. Not in golf.

Tennis is definitely a much harder sport to dominate.

the same can be said about tennis courts. So while tiger only has to worry about the course, federer has to worry about the court as well as the opposing player.

Well course management is the most difficult part of the game to master in golf, so let's just stop and agree that golf is much more difficult to dominate than tennis.

There is always somebody dominating in tennis, federer is just this decades player. He'll be usurped in a few years anyway when some new hotshot comes and takes his place.

there's waaay more variables that need to be taken into account in golf than there is in tennis

I'd put Nadal ahead of Roddick and Hewitt. Maybe Nalbandian too, though not if Roddick keeps playing as well as he did.

Keep in mind, if this had been, in his prime, tiger would probably win in my book. That two year span where he won 4 majors in a row was unprecedented dominance. But at the current moment, I think tiger is not quite as dominant as back then (others have caught up somewhat), and Federer is in supreme dominance mode.

No.

That should very simply show who is the most dominant.

Not a bad logical argument, but statistically you are very wrong. There have always been great tennis players with (virtually) unbeatable match records in any given year.

To give you an idea of the difficulty of golf, the best player of our generation, Tiger Woods has rebuilt his swing twice in his career already (IIRC in 1998 and again in 2002). Each time, his game definitely slumped in the following year of play. The only beloved patriot in Tiger's armor is Ryder Cup play.

FWIW Tiger > Roger (I mean just the name.)

I would say Federer is more dominant because he is so far above and beyond his competition. You really can't debate that.

However, Tiger's dominance is more impressive given the nature of his sport.

ummm yeah lets just stop  pathetic...

its unusual for a player to dominate more than a decade in tennis because it actually requires endurance. you probably think tennis requires much less endurance than football or something but if you actually had ever played, you'd understand the effort by tennis players and appreciate the sport a bit more. have you ever played tennis?

I play both tennis (15+ years) and golf (6+ years) and I find advancing against other players much more harder in tennis.

Umm, wtf? Last I heard they were making the golf courses longer. Yup, that really hinders Tiger's game. Oh wait, no it doesn't, because Tiger has a ridiculous drive.

WTF? How is this even an argument? Are you saying no one else but Tiger has dominated golf? Um, Nicklaus? Ben Hogan? Arnold Palmer?

In cycling, it was Lance Armstrong.

In Basketball, you had the Bulls, before that the Lakers, before that the Celtics.

Keep making assumptions. I've played many sports and if you couldn't tell from other threads am an avid tennis entuhsiast (since I used to play).

But the impact and domiance tiger has can't be compared by Federers dominance. Fedrere will be done in a few years once the next up and comer hits stride.
