Who's cancelled their NYT subscription yet?

I mean they have always had their terrible, you know, like selling the Iraq war like it was a shiny new car. But lately their headlines and articles are crucifying Biden for his age, rarely mentioning Trump's age-related fuck ups, and on so many other subjects they are quite biased by essentially protecting the shittiness of the right. I'm the first to admit Biden's flaws, but their coverage on that part of him is completely over the top and they treat Trump with kid gloves for not just his age, but much worse shit.

I have seen a lot of people on Threads cancel their subscription, though I can't say it's making much of a dent or not. Anyway, I cancelled last year due to similar reasons, but I am on the $4/month retention plan for the whole shebang, All Access, including the Cooking section and the cooking app, plus the Athletic, etc...which always goes to $25/month after a lower intro price period. I will never pay more than $4/month for the Times, if I keep my subscription.

As far as consuming New York Times, I’ll do what I always do with any media/journalism, I’ll trust but verify. Highlighting an opinion without disclosing a potential bias seems like a failure of basic journalistic integrity.

This is because you don't read and are clueless about what you speak of. The threads all in context stand for themselves. I've said how I support Biden a million times. At this point it's in multiple threads. I'm not going to type it every fucking time for people that want to hop in, read a few latest posts, and then go in attack mode based on a smidgen of the conversations.
Use your eyes. Read. Somehow I still have faith you might actually figure it out if you try to be objective. I mean I wouldn't bet much money on it, but maybe something.

Do what I did. I do think there is good stuff on there so it's worth something, which is why I keep it at the promo rate. Just chat to cancel and they'll offer you the 4 bucks a month for a year thing for All Access. Let them take less until they become much less biased.

The NYT is still the preeminent daily newspaper in the U.S., largely because most papers were wrecked by the Web and dwindling print ad sales. The NYT has successfully pivoted to a digital subscriptions business model, which virtually all newspapers (still standing) have tried but haven't been successful at.

One can just ignore their flawed presidential polling, or any other bits that are crappy journalism. It takes a LOT of money to run a newsroom, and the NYT is one of the few outfits who still has the resources to do it.

Many public libraries will give you free online access to the NYT, WashPo, WSJ, etc. You just have to login to get a "pass" that can range from 3-7 days, typically. You won't be able to read everything on The Athletic, but anything that's linked from the NYT home page generally will work for that day.

I subscribed for I guess a couple or years or more. It was IIRC $15/month, then they boosted it to $20, which was pricey but hey, it seemed to be the best online source for news, plus several people I know and have some respect for subscribed. Then I got info that I could subscribe for less. One person here said he paid $10/month I think, maybe less, and had expanded access to boot. I saw a post in the comments to a NYTimes article in which the poster said they got reduced rates by cancelling. The Times would ask why and offer a cheaper rate. After a year he'd do it again, rinse, repeat. I tried that a few months ago and by golly it worked. I answered to the query that it was too expensive and I got reset at $4/month. I don't get recipes (no biggie for me), not the Athletic, but I find I can usually read their stories anyway when I click them on their home page. Most I don't want to read, just the occasional one.

Every news organization is flawed to some degree. I find the NYT among the least flawed, although they, too, like all good liberals, fall prey to regrettable "even-handedness."

I am especially grateful for long-form investigatory journalism like that found in The Atlantic, et al. Finally, I truly don't need opinion pieces or someone else interpreting the news for me.

Edit: That looks to be New York Times Audio. I am not into audio except for music. Have never done a book audio, don't do podcasts, being people talking. I read interviews, articles, etc. That's faster than audio.

Looks like I can sign up for free 24 hour access to online print NYTimes, but again, it's just 24 hours. $4/month I can handle.

So how it generally works is there is a portal page on BPL where you login with your library card and "PIN." Then it kicks you over to the NYT, where you've previously logged in.

The pass is good for 3 days, and you can store the library card credentials in Chrome if you want to. I don't actually read the NYT every single day, so I only login a couple times a month when I feel like there are articles I want to catch up on. You can still share the 10 monthly articles, as any subscriber can.

Yes, there's a bit of overhead having to login after 3 days but it's not a big deal. The other fly in the ointment is that when the library kicks you over to NYT, it always has a couple of "setup" pages to click through. This really should be a one-time thing, but NYT hasn't fixed that yet. After that, it's just the normal experience of the NYT web site. You can access it from any device you're logged into, not just the original one.

It's not just NYT that you get but also WashPo, CR, SF Chron, etc. $4/mo isn't much but I'm a cheap bastard.

It's tricky. Because I find it hard not to resent the fact that if & when I pay for a newspaper I am partially paying the salaries of that paper's opinion columnists, who I usually not only disagree with but often feel outright contempt or disgust for.

Some of them not only peddle opinions I regard as offensive or stupid, but aren't even good writers and don't even have an entertaining prose-style (I'm kind-of baffled how some of them keep their privileged positions - there's a couple who strike me as being barely-literate).

I don't mind writers I find politically-objectionable but who are great prose-stylists (e.g. not sure I ever agreed with anything Howard Jacobson said about anything when he had a regular column, but always envied the cleverness and style with which he said it).

At the same time, real investigative journalism costs money, so without people paying for the product it won't happen.

Maybe opinion columnists should be paid via a tipping system, like restaurant staff?

The other thing is, that to 'consume news from a wide variety of sources' is increasingly difficult (if you aren't very affluent) as more-and-more of it goes paywalled or subscription only.

I love ATP&N, and even the dessicated corpse of ATOT. There's an enduring reason the ground rules of ATP&N are markedly different from those sub-fora on the tech side. And I am given to understand that the really cool dude who oversees them has fought long and hard to keep it that way. Looong and hard.

So ATP&N is necessary. But it is not sufficient. One needs access to the panoply of available news sources to best even begin to understand the truth of things, to the extent that that is even possible.
