I've read the books a couple of times, though it's been a few years, but that does not answer my question on the films.

So nobody has seen both versions of the films?

??

Anyway, I put a pre-order in for the set, but now that I see the used theatrical set around $25 I'm a bit torn as I'm not sure I really need the extended.

Anyone here watched both the theatrical and extended versions and can give an opinion on whether the EEs are worth the extra money and runtime?

KT

after watching EE, you will notice that the theatrical versions 'jump' around because a lot of scenes that get cut from the theatrical versions aren't necessary, but help the movie flow better.

overall, it's not worth the extra money if you already have the theatrical release.

Hmm, ok, but since I do not have the originals, it seems to make sense to buy the EEs. Guess I'll keep the pre-order in. Thanks.

IMO that's a nice show book, but pretty bad from a usability standpoint. With books this long I'd want something more manageable.

I have the same exact book, and it is very well made. I have read through it several times, very usable IMO. It is a bit thick to fit into a small book bag though.

I got mine on Amazon a couple of years ago for about 1/3 of the price they are listing at that link.

I'm holding out for the Special Limitied Platinum Lost Footage 4D Smell-a-vision Blu-ray Edition myself.

Hmm, I had planned on buying this from Amazon, but now I'm not so sure either.

I'd done some scanning and they look amazing to me, nothing like the reviews describe, or at least not to that extent.

Hmm, this is a bit disconcerting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lHX_LNcJ5U

The Shire parts look ok in both parts, but the snow scene in the EE looks, not so good. :|

Cancelled my pre-order for now until I can do some more reading.

KT

WTF?! So they finally release EE version but they butcher the colors? I think I'll hold out for the Extended with the correct color Edition which I'm sure they'll release in a few years

I did see the theatricals (in the theater), and only the EE at one.

far and away, the theatrical versions are much better.

However, the one moment where I don't prefer the EE is in
Return of the King, when Aragorn dude goes into that mountain to recruit the ghost army. In the theatrical, the scene cuts and you do not get the answer from the ghost king. Later, when they appear on shore in the boats, it is far more dramatic because you have no idea what is going on and what is about to be unleashed. You see Aragorn and the gay little elf jumping out, and assume they are going to get trounced by this massive orc army. then the ghosts swarm out and murder everything. In the EE, the ghost king gives his answer. It's like, 2 seconds that have no business being added in, b/c it completely ruins that one moment. no idea why they would choose to put that in.

yeah, wow. I can't see any difference in the Shire, but the snow scene looks like the dude adjusted his levels in the wrong direction. D:

I recall the DVD EEs are absolutely dreadful. I used to watch the hell out of them--still own them--but then after getting my plasma ~5 years ago, I watched TT once, and couldn't finish it. I have not watched one of them since. :|

its been known for a few weeks that fellowship was overly green, there is a massive thread on AVS about it

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1307189

starts in the middle of that somewhere

haha. that is one of the reason's I rarely go to AVS anymore. they get super serious with this stuff. Understandably, technical > film for most of those people, and I simply don't get that, at all.

not at all why I watch movies (though I still love BD, HD, great sound and such, but it is a small part of what makes a film.)

the dvds also had a green tinge issue.

So wait, you prefer the EE or TE? I'm a tad confused. :hmm:

I can buy the TE Blu-rays for $20 used, so if it's not worth the extra $40 I'll skip the EEs for now. Kind of annoying they included fucking DVDs in this boxed set; I know it's only for extras, but what the hell is that bullshit? :colbert:

well, being that the EE add, overall, what....3-4 hours of content, and my only complaint is regarding 2-5 seconds of those 4 hours, I still prefer the EE.

especially the first and 2nd. They are much, much better. I pretty much hated the first one in the theater (had no exposure to the series prior to that). Enjoyed it much more, well, after TT was in theaters and re-watched the Fellowship EE.

so, yes: EE>>>>>TE

and I suppose that DVD extra content is probably the same extra content that was originally released with the DVD and EE releases? there are probably 12-15 hours of docs and crap on there. I can see why they wouldn't want to rescan that--plus, much of it was recorded, I think, on miniDV or something like that. ...I could be wrong, though. Not that the behind-the-scenes stuff really needs HD, anyway.

Ah ok, thanks for clarifying. I was a bit out of sorts there.

I know it sounds stupid but that snow scene is really driving me crazy, so I'm still undecided. :hmm:

it's really bad. like I mentioned earlier, watching TT on my plasma swore me off that movie for some time. It looks absolutely dreadful. the whole movie is kinda "purple." D:

...oh, and the added content is not bad--it's good and useful. yes, it drags things out a bit, but it flies along. ....And still 1/5 the running time if they had adapted the shitty novels scene for useless scene. :awe:

Hmm, damn. Was planning to watch the trilogy this long weekend, but maybe I'll skip it for now and watch Carlos instead.
