I'm torn on this. I love the movies but paying that much money for something I doubt I'll watch more than once per year just doesn't make sense. It would be for the purpose of just putting it on a shelf...

On the other hand, buying the Back to the Future trilogy on BRD for $14.99 today actually makes sense to me.

Yep. Grabbing that too! Got a $10 Best Buy card for buying an Apple TV last week. So it's only $5 for me this week.

Probably not. If I could I might rent them. I bought them on DVD but for some reason I did not watch them too much. I really like the movies and love the books. I've read the books several times but for some reason I haven't watched the movies too much. It's probably the time sink most of all. It's hard to be able to devote that much time to watch the movie. And in some ways, the extended edition makes it worse due to the added content.

You know, you can only watch a set of movies so many times-- no matter how much crap they keep adding to it.

Not gonna buy 10 different copies of the same movie.
Ditto Star Wars. Fucking greedy bastards. Hundreds of millions arent enough? You need a billion? FUCK YOU!

I got the theatrical cut on blu-ray last Christmas for $24. That's enough for me. I don't need another hour and a half of extra scenes.

I've heard the transfer wasn't too good on that version. I held out for the EEs no matter how cheap the other ones got.

I honestly think bluray makes a lot of stuff look worse. It's so clear you can see details of the movie set that take you out of the fantasy. That might just be me though.

hehe, that is true, actually. Especially with CGI-heavy films. a lot of times, heavy grain is added to mask bad CGI. With Blu Ray, that type of grain can be really obtrusive.

--I like real film grain, though.

HD is having an impact on Broadcast television, especially with makeup and such. I think that part of the industry has had to adjust their technique to cope with the higher levels of detail.

the EE's are different transfers from the first BD release?

wtf...

I have the DVD EE's and got them as they were released. I haven't really wanted to watch them in maybe 4 years.

I've only watched TT since upgrading to my plasma, and that looks absolutely horrible on an HD TV. The colors are totally blown.

Here's hoping the BD transfers fix that...

I was actually just randomly looking at the TVs at Fry's and came across two TVs that were playing one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. One looked nice and everything, then the other just stood out. It didn't look like film to me and made me want to look for the edge of the boom mic or flaws in the set pieces. It ended up being a high end 240Hz LCD.

To me, it's not the additional detail with blu-ray that knocks me out of the movie, it's the 240Hz refresh. All the motion blur is gone or something. 3D also annoys me so they still have to work on that for me to want to see movies in 3D even in theater. 3D done in Post just doesn't seem to look very good.

yeah, 240hz is garbage, if you ask me. Or maybe that's not it, I'm not sure. One of the gimmicks that LCD was running a few years ago, particularly with Samsung "Movie Motion" or whatever it is, looks absolutely dreadful. I think they toss in a few extra frames? somehow, but everything looks totally unnatural.

Yep, it's the refresh or interpolation, or whatever the hell they do with the new TVs. It makes everything look smooth and like a soap opera. I had to turn it off on my TV, I just couldn't handle it.

KT
I was watching basketball at a bar the other night and they had that enabled. It looks terrible. I don't know why anyone would want to leave it on... Any shot with panning is liable to make me nauseous. I remember when I got my new Samsung last year and popped in The Dark Knight; there's a scene where Batman, Gordon and Dent are talking on a rooftop and the camera is swirling around them. With the 120 Hz motionplus interpolation (or whatever the hell they call it) enabled, I was getting dizzy watching it; I immediately disabled it and never looked back.

I keep getting compliments on how good my TV looks; not one person has told me that the set at Best Buy or the bar or wherever looks better. Why the hell do the TV manufacturers bother including that "technology?" NOBODY WANTS IT!

I liked Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy, but I can only stomach watching all 12 hours of the extended versions once in a blue moon. I'll probably get Fellowship, since I just have the fullscreen DVD. I already have the extended DVDs of the other two.

For reference those scenes explain a lot of plot holes in the theatrical versions.
Which ones? Like what the Entmoot do to Sarumon or the burning of the Shire? The movies were long enough as-is and the plot holes were closed well enough to suspend my disbelief, even if they left out portions of the book. I can appreciate that other folks want the extra scenes, it's just not important to me.

Heard from where? The transfer on the theatrical edition is fine. I've watched them a couple times on my 1080p projector and see no issues with edge-enhancement, banding, softness, or whatever problems you typically get from a bad transfer.

I am waiting til the actual One Ring is included

Best Buy includes the ring + chain if you preorder the extended blu-rays. I saw them there the other day. The ring is already in the box so you can get it the day you preorder, then get the movies when they come out.

The movie Van Helsing is an excellent example of this... It's a decent movie, but looks fake in blu ray.

That said, if the LOTR BR transfer is good, I'll probably get it. I tend to watch these about once a year.

I have the 3 on dvd, theatrical releases, not the extended versions.
I'll probably pick up the extended bluray set, but not for $60+.
I too will wait for gold box deal...

If we had a BR player and I was fast enough to get in on the Borders sale I'd have gotten it but alas I won't...for now.
