Who's better: Virgin Atlantic OR British Airways?

Those two are pretty much the same price, and quite a bit cheaper than the other options for me. (They're also one of few flights that have enough open seats available so that everybody can travel together...there's 5 or 6 of us).

So yeah, which airline is better?

Find out what the scheduled plane is, what seats are available, and look up the seating arrangement on seatguru.com and use that to decide.

isn't Virgin supposed to have lots of perks?

Oh? I'd like to hear about this, lol.

Oh yeah--obviously this is coach. We're students.

Virgin is awesome, however I haven't flown in a couple of years. There aren't a lot of perks in coach, however you do get a decent goodie bag with ear plugs, socks, facemask, various doodads. The staff is really cool, and well, in general the stewardesses are younger and hotter (yes, I am shallow like that 😛 ). Food was good. You get a personal entertainment system in your seat (was a nintendo and several movie/TV channels when I flew, might have upgraded since). They don't fly many places so they have a kind of small company feel to them which I like.

BA is fine, I have no complaints with them, nothing too special though.

Flown twice to Europe with BA and was very happy. You also get your own personal entertainment screen with about 20 channels, but no Nintendo.

BA does a good job of giving you snacks, drinks, and the meals are good. Every couple hours they would offer drinks. Seats were pretty comfortable and had these little head rest things that folded out from the top of your chair so you wouldn't fall over into the aisle or someone else's seat.

El Al FTW

Security

At least six (formerly two) undercover agents accompany each international El Al flight, sitting amongst passengers whilst holstering firearms. All El Al pilots are former Israeli Air Force fighter pilots, and all El Al flight crew members are trained in hand to hand combat. In fact, most El Al employees have served in the Israeli army (since national service is compulsory in Israel).

El Al security procedures also require that all passengers be interviewed individually prior to boarding, allowing El Al staff to identify possible security threats. All passengers are classified on a basic 3 tier threat scale: Israelis and Jews are usually classified as the lowest threat, Westerners are usually classified as medium level threats, and Arabs (particularly males) are usually classified as high threat. In addition, all luggage must pass through a decompression chamber. El Al is the only airline in the world that passes all luggage through this special chamber.

The El Al fleet is also the only commercial airline fleet in the world to be equipped with anti-missile countermeasures.

As a result of the tight security, only one El Al plane has been successfully hijacked, in 1968 (see below for details).

El Al FTW FTW!!!!

Well, you did a good job of picking the two best transatlantic carriers. Both BA and VA are excellent (I've flown them both to London multiple times). As long as you avoid the domestics (AA, United, Continental, Delta, etc.), you're doing good. I've had the misfortune of flying American Airlines to London twice -- it was not a pleasant experience.
