I was surprised and dismayed to find out how many of the 'Christian' employees at work are anti-Halloween. You know, the Pagan celebration, devil's holiday, etc. I've always thought of Halloween as a kid's day, get dressed up, have fun, get sick on candy :)
Now these people tell me they won't let their kids go out on Halloween, because of what they think it 'stands for'. I maintain that kids don't think of it that way, that those parents should stop ruining it for their kids and let them be kids....

A holiday is what you make of it. If you carve pentagrams in your ass and chant "Satan shall consume us all...praise him! Praise him!" then yeah, I would think it's a "devil's holiday" for you...but if you throw on a Power Rangers costume and bug your neighbors for candy, I'll jsut say it's an annoying holiday. ;)

Unless, of course, you throw on the Pink Ranger costume...

I hear ya. What bugs me is that they're having their kids make the same thing of it that they do. :|

I like Halloween. I don't buy candy, though, because I always buy too damn much of it, and never get as many kids as I figure I will, and end up finishing it off myself and passing out in a sugar coma. So I go out on Halloween nights. ;)

I'm afraid to go out, lest the kids egg my house back to the stone age!

Hell, my next door neighbors leave the yard full of empty beer cans every weekend. Some eggs and TP would probably class up the joint.

To extrapolate from your thinking, then Jews should decorate their houses at Christmas and give their kids gifts.

Same thing, different event.

I'm anti-halloween for the simple reason that I think it's fairly stupid. I don't know any Christians, and I come from a very conservative Christian background, who seriously consider it evil. My parents choose to emphasize the fact that Nov 1 is All Saints Day, and Oct 31 is All Hallow's Eve. Whatever works.

When I have kids I think I'll do the halloween thing but being a ba myself, I won't be going for the little devil/pitchfork outfits. :)

I am for Halloween.
It allows children to feel powerful, special, and important.
Some children have trouble talking to adults; the act of looking an adult and saying "trick or treat" is helpful socialization.

I don't really like Halloween. Kids and adults dressing up as witches, devils, monsters, ghosts, etc just doesn't strike me as a good thing.

When/if I have a family I'll allow my kids to take part in Halloween, but I won't approve of them dressing up as ghouls or goblins.

Which neighbors?

Halloween has nothing to do with "the devil" or witches or any other christian crap.

That is what happens when christians don't fully understand something and decide to make up crap to make it look wrong or bad.

Devil's night is another one. There is no such thing. That is another recent invention.

I'm anti-Christmas gifts too. Nuisance, and it trains kids really wrong. It's amazing to watch a four year old turn incredibly materialistic around Christmas. I don't mind the giving of gifts, but when it gets to be expected, then I have issues. I give gifts at Christmas, but I respectfully request my relatives and whoever to NOT give me anything. Christmas has been much better like that.

Most people don't even know what a ghoul really is. It is someone who digs up and eats human corpses.

Well, it pretty clearly derived from a pagan/druid holiday or event, and as such is not exactly Christian.
Then again, so is Easter, but Easter is essential for Christianity.
So, one Pagan holiday is not Christian, and the other Pagan holiday is Christian.
How do you decide?
Well, the central Christian dogma is that one is saved by Grace.
This tells us Halloween is nto really an issue.
So, what is the harm in not doing it?
Not doing it, and claim it in the name of Christianity misses the point, mis represents Christianity, and probably turns a lot of folks off.

Yup.

Easter is a pagan celebration as is Christmass. It was adopted by early christians then changed to something completely different from what it was.

April fools day was also a pagan celebration. It was their new year. Christians changed the new year day to January 1st. And then called the pagans fools.
