My hard drive has just started making this "Whoosh....click" type of noise when trying to access files. It has not crashed my comp yet, but should I start looking into a new HDD?

Anyone else have this problem? It's a 6.4GB UDMA/33 Quantum Fireball ST HDD

Thanks
Erwin

Don't forget to RMA the old drive if it's less than 3 years old... they might even give you a bigger one! :) There should be a date of manufacture on the drive somewhere, or you can go to Quantum's website and check the warranty status online...

Really? I can RMA it? Yeah I got it during the summer of 98. Does this still apply if I don't have the receipt of the retailer I bought it from?

Atleast with Western Digital, I believe they go by the date stamped on the drive if you don't have the reciept.

Wow...I didn't know that. I'll be sure to look into that after I get a new hard drive.

thanks!

I just RMA'd two Maxtor drives 12 Gig and 27.2 Gig. I usually have no problems with Maxtor drives. I ran their diag. program from the website on one that was loosing sectors and such and it came up bad. Then I remembered that I had a bad sector on my big 27.2 Gig drive. It came up bad also. I have several other Maxtor drives that test out fine. The last date on their site to RMA my drives was 2003, so you should definately check with the manufacturer. Maxtor is usually 3 years. IBM 3-5 years.

WD was pretty good to me when my drive died a couple weeks ago. It was made in may of 99 and they replaced it with one made in April 2000. I bought it OEM from a place online I can't remember and WD didn't care I guess as long as the serial# didn't come up stolen.

Follow this simple two step process and you won't have any problems:

1) Backup data.
2) RMA drive.

The Maxtor I bought 4 months ago crashed recently. They sent me a refurbished drive as a replacement. I hope nothing goes wrong with the replacement. In the meantime, though, I got a tape drive to protect myself against losing anything.

make sure to get your next drive with S.M.A.R.T. technology. It will tell you in advance when you drive will crap out. I know maxtor supports it, dunno about others.

Quantum uses SMART on their drives (infact I think SMART was developed by Quantum).
