Those (engineers) were Intel. You're right, though. I knew someone (who) was part of the team that designed the (now-defunct) i740-based video card chipset. At the time, he said, "8 MB is enough for on-board video. System RAM via AGP will handle the rest." This was in 1998.
Go figure. At the time, he was probably right.
