What's a good, free way to recover files?

Help!

Windows XP, 1800 songs :(

Tell her to just copy them from her CDs again. I mean, they're legal, right?

PS: if the computer has been turned off, chances are slim of solution that doesn't involve paying some company some fat cash.

Even if she does own them, it would be easier downloading them. Ripping and tagging 1800 songs? Bleh.

Considering the size of all of those mp3's, didn't it warn you that it would have to permanently delete them and ask you to confirm?

First thing I would do is stop using the computer, the more you use it the less chance of getting the files back

go to download.com (try to make sure NOTHING ELSE IS WRITTEN TO THE DRIVE!) look for a program called "PC File and recovery" and run it on your computer with her drive as a slave. Eh, the hell with it heres the link: http://www.download.com/PC-Inspector-Fi.../3000-2248_4-10118664.html?tag=lst-0-1

Program works wonders, works on the worst case scenarios. You can run the program on HER drive but each time you install programs and run things you could potentially be destroying her data..

Ah man! Thanks for the link. But I ended up buy some $40 software to recover the files.
:(

How it happened:
She asked me to clean up her computer and I found a folder with the name of some old, spyware ridden P2P file sharing program.
Me: you should really get rid of this
Her: yeah I should
Me: *delete*
Her: will that delete my MP3's?
Me: MP3?!?!? Wha?

Recovered them all. All's well. Thanks for the help.

"you = jackass

how can you be so careless?"

:) I completely agree. I was trying to study for an exam and was in a hurry and was careless. Oh well, everything's okay now.

Thnaks for the link. It worked like a charm. Got 99% of my data back and all of my tax info from the last 3 years. A must have program. :)
