I switched over to RH8 a week or so ago for my work box, because I was having too many problems (speed, etc.) with WinXP -- Dual933 Xeon, 512mb RAM, Radeon 7k, 18gb 10kRPM SCSI Drive, you'd think that would satisfy the MS gods.

Anyway, the only thing I had really left to complain about is that page rendering in Mozilla and Galeon really didn't look that great. It was ok, don't get me wrong, but definitely not anything special.

Just a few minutes ago, I went over to ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/experimental/xft/2002-10-8 and downloaded an AA font patch for it. Pages look much nicer now. :D

Anyway...just random rambling. Here's a screenie for those who care.

Before AA Fonts (Galeon)

After AA Fonts

Unfortunately I still can't get AA fonts working in Galeon, my browser of choice, but oh well. This is nice for now. :D

Yeah, I always forget that you can't put [] in the descriptions for links here. It screws up Zuni's coding. :p

Hmm, I hadn't been a fan of AA fonts (IMO it works best on high-res LCDs w/ ClearType and on larger fonts).

But seeing the screenshots, I may give it another try. AA is arguably better in general, but if it isn't implemented extremely well, the blurriness of small type is very annoying. Wonder if any GUIs allow you to tune at which font size AA kicks in.

Hmmmm I love linux, its great, but stuff like that is why I just can't force myself to use as a desktop/workstation yet. I used to like tinkering, but after a while its just frustrating to have to spend a day to get all your fonts in all your apps looking good, and so on. I'm still just going to try RH8 out of habit, but I'll stick to gentoo and debian on servers I think.....

If you're using KDE and you want to use Windoze TrueType fonts just make a ".fonts" directory and copy the *.ttf fonts into it and restart the X server. You can then select them in the KDE control center.

I only use Debian for servers, but RH8 is working as a desktop as well as XP was, if not better, now. Though there are disadvantages, performance in WinXP was really lagging on my box, and the AA font installation was really easy:

-Download .tar.gz file.
-cp .tar.gz file to /usr/local
-tar zxvf filename
-Remove old mozilla binary from /usr/bin
-Create symlink in /usr/bin for new mozilla binary

Voila! I wish Galeon were that easy, though.

Wow... didn't know that patch existed. I hated the default fonts in Mozilla, so I copied the MS fonts from xp and imported it to mandrake 8.2. And I had similar results you did.

Ohhh I know, but I am an opera user so I have to point it to the fonts, then the word processor, etc. On a couple of my workstations the onboard sound doesn't work although it may not. Just sheer laziness man. I understand about XP too, been there tried that, reinstalled 2k. ;)

Anyway not a crap, just had to whine some. I restarted the sshd on a remote machine this morning and it didn't come back up so I'm a bit cranky hehe.

You didn't reboot the box, install the latest SP + hotfixes & defrag? j/k :p
