Whoo, free Wifi coming to all of SF

Wow I am so damn jealous. Serously, though $40 per month for internet * 48 months is a lot of money saved for the millions of san fran residents, not to mention tourists. That and I could nef on anandtech while walking in the park...

Props to google. Google checkout helped me pick up a bunch of stuff on the cheap thanks to the $20 discount, Gmail is my preffered mail service, picasa and google earth kick arse, and now this.

Doesn?t exactly offset the ridiculously high cost of living.

Well your SF cost of living is pretty comparable to my N.VA cost of living at least hosunig wise. I dont exactly live in a prime location and my house is below average in size and it cost so much $$, It's incredible.

"This agreement to bring free universal wireless internet access to San Francisco is a critical step in bridging the digital divide that separates too many communities from the enormous benefits of technology," Newsom said.

No way does a 1 br place go for $2k..even today. In the most expensive areas of town it'd be $1500-$1600 max, around SFSU it's closer to $1k total.

So how does this help the poor? The article says: "San Francisco estimates about 30 percent of its residents don't have Internet access at home." So what percent of those people actually have computers? Is someone going to be handing out computers to the poor as well.

I'm all for this cool project that seems to not cost any tax dollars but don't be so altruistic that it really is going to help the poor.

well i'd ask to see her receipts for proof but i can't say i care that much.

The estimated $14 million to $17 million cost of building and maintaining the Wi-Fi system will be shouldered by EarthLink. The Atlanta-based company will try to recoup its investment by charging $21.95 per month to surf the Web at speeds three to four times faster than the free service.

Slow is free, fast will cost a lot more.

It's $1,600 for an apartment near SFSU. Price could have been $2k back then during the start of the dot com craze when people were paying $1k to live in a garage.

IDIOT IDIOT IDIOT IDIOT.

Do you want them getting rich by charging you for WiFi service?

Get this...now stay with me...companies are in the business to....wait for it...MAKE MONEY.

Of course they'll make money off the Ad space and various other deals. BUT, atleast the end-user is getting something out of the deal and not paying up front for it.
