According to Peter Jennings the building collapsed but they didn't see an explosion to cause it.

It was caused by the damage of the crash. There had to be hundreds on the ground around that building.

Another passenger plane struck the lower portion of the South Tower causing it to crash. Building came down and probably took some other buildings with it(domino effect). They won't know the damage until after the smoke clears.
