whole house fan

A coworker was talking about a whole house fan and how it works wonders with cooling your home.
During triple digit days, as far as heat is concerned, I'm wondering if this will even be effective for cooling.
It seems like it would be fairly cost effective if I don?t have to turn my AC on all the time.

Any thoughts on this?

I love ours, but it's only really useful for one room. You seal up everything else and open the window in the room you want the breeze. It would do next to nothing if it was 100F+ though. We use it when the temps are in the lower 80s. It's AC above that.

My mom's house has one. It draws air into the attic from the house. The airflow also moves hot air out of the attic. They work well if the house is hotter than outside, but draw air from outside. Door stops are required.

We call ours an attic fan - blows air out the top of the house, so you open your windows and outside air gets sucked in.

It is wonderful for days where it's warm but not hot out. When it gets hot, the windows get shut and the AC comes on.

I forgot to mention two thing:

1. If you have outdoor allergies you may want to steer clear, as an attic fan will draw in a lot of stuff from outside.

2. An offshoot of #1. Your screens will get dirty very quickly from pulling in so much crap from outside.

My parents have one of the attic mount ones, and I had a big window mount one in the last house I lived in. They work very well at night when it cools off. As long as it's <75 degrees, you can just use it and you won't need AC.

They are fantastic during the change of seasons. Nothing like it on the first day to spring to air out the house, and get some nice warm air in.

well thanks for the info
i might be out of luck then
i have pretty decent allergies so this might not be a good idea
plus i was thinking of cooling costs and bringing them down

i suppose im kind of screwed
might as well go with solar panels instead hehe

Also if you're in a high humidity location, don't use it to replace A/C. My wife lost a closet-full of clothes due to mold (though I had warned her first, oh well).

Get an attic fan without any connection to your living areas. A high flow attic fan + adequate soffit ventilation + A/C in the living areas = significantly cooler upstairs.

This is an option, as well. We have a power vent on one gable to let out hot air in the summer and moisture in the winter.
