Whole chickens can be had for $0.69/lb - 1.99/lb. Chicken breasts are close to $4.00/lb, but you get all meat for the money, no bones or hard to reach meat.

Whole roasted chickens taste better, esp if you cook w/ the skin.

Discuss.

Go to Sam's Club. You can buy boneless chicken breast for $2/lb at regular price.

Whole chicken, definitely. I'm still working on perfecting the roasted chicken. I'm close, but not quite there... Smoking works really well too, though.

Any time you avoid paying for food processing, you save money. And I don't like chicken breast, tasteless cardboard.

About once a month chicken breasts go on sale for $1.99 so I buy plenty and freeze em.

To me, chicken breasts are super bland unless you bread them.

I hate white meat poultry. Companies always advertise how their product is "Now made with 100% white meat!!", like it's something special. That's the new code phrase for "do not buy".

As was stated above, less processing will be cheaper, but more labor intensive for the end user.

Try zatarin's yellow rice. I add the cooked, bite-sized chicken (with some garlic based spices but no additional salt) and make individual, freezable servings. Be generous with the chicken. Fresh veggies can be added at meal time.

I usually buy a whole chicken and cook it myself. You get more meat for less money. Dark meat is great for making sandwiches.

I think Foster Farms is working on that. Then, when coupled with the beakless bird invented by KFC, they'll have almost a perfect chicken...:p

We buy all of the chicken-varieties. Whole bird for beer-can chicken, breasts for chicken strips and teriaki chicken as well as BBQ for the wife, legs (for me) for BBQ, and occasionally, cut-up fryers for fried chicken. (yes, it's cheaper to buy a whole bird and cut it up, but sometimes the convenience is worth the couple of extra pennies per lb.

Whole chicken is a much better value. Plus the bones and carcass are used to make yummy chicken stock. We can eat off a whole chicken for 4 days - roast it day one, casserole day 2-3 and chicken noodle soup day 4.

Didn't realize so many people had a poor opinion of white meat. I like dark meat ok, but I love white meat.
