Whole apartment infested with thousands of fruit flies

Need some help. Let my nephew stay for 5 days while I went up north. Came home to popcans/food containers/slurpee cups and half empty beer bottles. The best was the container half full of 5 day old sushi in the back room.

Any tips or tricks? One just flew into my mouth as I typed this.

For a couple of fruit flies a cup of apple cider vinegar with a slice of fruit and a drop of soap will handle it.

For literally thousands, that means they're in your neighbor's place as well. Since it's an apartment, clean up and then have them send in pest control to all the units.

Your nephew deserves a mild beating.

Well he ain't allowed back for atleast 30 days. I tried something similar to your vinegar trap..only caught about 20 flies with that since yesterday evening.

I will go by a flyswatter I guess ...atleast they are slow.

I'm not worried about my neighbours..I live above a store and there is no connecting apartments on this strip mall.

My point is that even if you magically instantly killed all of them, it would be 2 min before they've crawled through vents again.

Clean up, call apartment management, they will send pest people to handle it. And hopefully bill you for it. Then send the bill to the kid's parents.

30 days?

Probably not going to happen. Little behind in the rent if you know what I mean. Just when I had the mice infestation under control..now this :sigh:

I have this plague every summer at my apartment. Their numbers vary greatly from one day to the next.

I can't eliminate all food sources because they turn to the cat litter when there's nothing else.

What I'm wondering is if by "my nephew" you really mean you and by "just noticed" you really mean were just notified by your mom.

First thing, remove the filth they are eating.

fruit flies can live for up to 40-50 days in optimal conditions, during which females can lay tons of eggs (wiki)

seriously, call an exterminator. notify the building super... have you already eliminated any food sources?

what kind of litter? I've always been afraid of the corn-based litter for bug reasons.

I cleaned the place from top to bottom and bleached everything. Had childrens aid society coming by but they never showed up. Now I have 4 days to get rid of these flies before they come back again.

fuck me!

Have had fruit flies a few times. No biggie

One cup of apple cider vinegar ($2-3) in each room and either a. cover with cling wrap with a few small holes (cannot get out) or, b. a drop of detergent (they will drown in the venegar).

Problem will be solved within 2-3 days. Easy.

Just seeing that you have "thousands" of them.

If literally, you may want to up the cup into a bowl, pot or bucket.

I will go by a flyswatter I guess ...atleast they are slow.

I've noticed that most of them are slow and easy to swat with my hand when they land on surfaces. When their numbers start to decrease, the few that remain are usually fast and smart enough to land around cabinet handles and corners where they're harder to swat. I think I'm breeding smarter flies when I keep killing-off the dumb / slow ones.

I read somewhere that turning on one light in the house will attract them to that room. Then light a candle in that room and turn off the light. They'll kill themsleves on the flame.
