i'm trying to register a domain and it expires in october...at the bottom of the whos is says:

Registry Status: clientRenewProhibited
Registry Status: clientTransferProhibited
Registry Status: clientUpdateProhibited
Registry Status: clientDeleteProhibited

does this mean the current owner cant update and i will be able to buy the domain when it expires?

what is the best way to make sure i have the best chance at getting this domain...

It means nothing, the domain is Not yours so why you expect that you can manipulate the domain controller?

If you want to know whether it is going to be available, or to reserve it in case it going to be available, you have to email the owner, and or the Registrar.

Take into consideration that when you do so a price tag would probably come with it and it would more than just the registration fee.

Otherwise, wait to the expiration date and keep trying.

You should know that many registrars have some cooling period and they are not necessarily making the Domain available immediately at the expiration date.

I tried to put my hands on few domains that where registered but Not active. I emailed the parties as well as trying to check it after expiration and never got anywhere.

The status lines only mean that the domain is "locked". My memory is fuzzy on this point, but IIRC there was some kind of issue a few years back where domains could be transferred away from their rightful owners (swiped, essentially) without thorough validation of the process. As a protection against this, places like GoDaddy offer "locking", which prevents any kind of update or transfer without the owner specifically unlocking the domain first.

So what you see does not in any way imply that the current owner will be releasing the domain. If you want it, you'll likely have to buy it.
