whois on hosting company's domain?

why is it that a whois on a hosting company's domain, doesn't give any info?

e.g.

www.salvaggio.50megs.com

doesn't give any info.

Also, is a domain like that basically private? i.e. in the sense of keeping the user out of whois records ? Is it not private in any way?
