I rented one recently. I've driven worse, I've driven better. My main feedback though that sticks out in my head is the cupholders. Here is where they are:

For full effect, picture yourself driving with the armrest. You have to reach over and around these to get your drink. I've never seen anything so terribly placed in a vehicle. It would be like having the stereo buttons placed behind the driver's head rest.

If there was a car without cup holders, I would get it... take out the temptation to the passenger of thinking that drinks are ok in a car :p

Even worse are the SS variants. Who...why?! They're as bad as the Turbo charged PT Cruisers that are riced out with flames and huge diffusers and spoilers. Some people should just not be allowed to choose their cars.

Not surprisingly, the same man designed both the PT Cruiser and the HHR. For his accomplishments, he was made head of Cadillac, before they realized that he had no business running a car division less than a year later.

I don't get those. Always see a handicap sticker in the front window of an HHR. The SS also seems to attract the same crowd or extremely fat white trash chics.

Agree with all the criticisms of the HHR.

Cupholders are an absolutely crucial part of any vehicle, though :)

I had one for a few days from a dealer while my car was getting repaired, weak acceleration, poor handling, poor visibility. Maybe good as an economical alternative to a full sized van but that's about it..

While these car/van/tucks are fugly as all get out I had contemplated buying one a few years back (I ended up buying a G6 GTP) the biggest downside for me was the HUGE blind-spots.

then they would just hold it in their laps. besides maybe the driver would want some cup holders? competition is high and could be the sway someone needs to choose a similar car...one with cup holders.

I had one as a rental once - forget about the armrest, you can't even put the parking brake lever down if there's anything even the size of a hotel-standard little paper coffee cup in the cup holder.

I own multiple cars with no cup holders, but I also have a rule of no food/drinks in my cars other than my daily which does have cup holders.

The HHR SS is an abomination, but can be fast as hell too. Same motor as the kappa twins and Cobalt SS. With a tune and a few mods you can make enough power to jerk the wheel out of your hand on the freeway.

Had one for a rental. Was supposed to have it for two weeks. Couldn't live with it for that long. Horrendous interior build quality, weak engine for the vehicles weight, and it felt cramped. I'm athletic and not a fattie. Went to the airports transportation center and exchanged it for a Malibu. (Quite the drive from where I was at.) Same manufacturer, night and day difference.

My Civic only had 2 cup holders. That seriously sucked.
Current car has about 8, and it really helps.
GF's old ass Corolla has 2 cup holders in the worst possible place and they can't hold drinks worth shit. I hate that car so much. A car with no usable cup holders is like a condom with a bunch of holes in it. The main point of buying a car is to hold cups, and it can't even do that.

I buy my car to drive it, sorry.

My Prelude has 0 cup holders and it is great. The Z has one on the center console, and another if you open the compartment behind that one. Each door will hold a small beverage as well. To be honest, in a passenger car, a couple in the front and a couple in the back do you fine. 10 cup holders are just overkill. Hold the damn drink...

Recently used his cup holder for transporting a jar of home made quince jam...

Other than that I have found them pretty pointless...

VW used to have cupholders that popped out of the dash directly above the radio. When you were using a cup holder, it completely obscured the radio.

yeah, my gti had those. The worse part about them would be the condensation that would drip INTO the radio upon acceleration which my supercharged vr6 had plenty of

Call me a wimp but it seems to me any modern car short of a pure supercar should have cupholders, and if they're as badly designed as the ones in the HHR as pictured, God knows what other issues the manufacturer has failed to carefully design and implement.

My E90 has a pair of stupidly overengineered cupholders that slide out of the dashboard when needed. They suspend your drink over the passenger's legs and invariably, on rough pavement, cause it to splash somewhat. They also get gummed up and break at the drop of a hat. At least, if I'm giving the engineers the benefit of the doubt, they were trying hard (perhaps too hard).
