Google makes it. Of course it kicks ass.
are we absolutely sure it doesn't phone home ? I know Google rocks in AT's mind, but you can't help but think the worst in a company collecting data from everywhere. Free, from Google... hmm....

Anyone know if Picasa 2 can handle RAW files from a DSLR?

Good question. Does RAW format vary at all by camera? I've actually never used it (owing to the massive file size)

My pornless pictures directory is 2.43GB with 13,450 files in 703 folders and using directories works just fine for me. I guess I'm missing the point of the program.

Where it becomes really nice is the import feature. I hooked up an HP PSC1350 all-in-one to my laptop a few days ago.... install all of their oh so intrusive and process eating software and I couldn't scan. I needed to scan some stuff for a lab report and it wouldn't do anything.... press scan.... wait.... nothing. So I opened up Picasa2 and hit import and wala, up pops HP Scanning Software. It scanned it in and then took it straight to picasa for me to rotate, straighten, crop and do other crazyt sh!t to it.

It is nice because if you have a digital camera you don't need to install the software that came with it to get your photos.... you import them with Picasa and then name them whatever, rotate them on the fly as they come off the camera and then put them in any folder you want.

You can do all that without Picasa and even then without the camera's software.

Does it still create those crappy picasa.ini files in every folder?

why is that bad, are they not hidden?

thumbs+ puts a thumbs.db file in ever folder but you dont actually see it

It sucks. I keep pics on a local server and Picasa can't handle it. Freezes, crashes etc. (and this over wires, not wireless)

I have 20+gig on a local server and Picasa acceses them all just fine.

Well it must be different because I see the options to handle those file types, plus you mention ACDsee and Thumbs+ are better well but those programs cost money. Picasa2 is free.
