Whoa... what's the # of viruses (virii?) record?

Trying to clean up my inlaws computer - complaint: it's running slow.
Figured it was just a lot of adware/spyware stuff... but did a virus check for them...

949 infected files (and still going)

(With complaints that it's taking me too long to get their computer back to them)

I've seen something like 10000 infected files due to Netsky.

I actually just decided to do a reformat on my own computer. (Well, not decided, more like my wife wiped out my sound card drivers, and the only way the motherboard will recognize the soundblaster live card is if I install it *before* the via chipset drivers - prompting starting from scratch, since there was more wrong than just the sound card)


Anyway, I discovered Ghost. What a wonderful wonderful program!!!!!!

Me? I never scan for viruses. In fact, I stuck their hard drive into my computer, since their anti-virus software was messed up (and couldn't be updated, due to one of the several viruses they have). I downloaded, installed, and am running AVG solely for this purpose. And, it found no viruses on my hard drives while it was at it.

On the other hand, I don't do anything stupid, plus, I just run an online scan on anything that I think might be suspicious.

You put a hard drive that was known to have a virus in your own computer? Instead of using a floppy disk based virus scan to remove the infection from the drive while it was in its original computer. You could have easily infected your personal machine.

1? When I download from newsgroups I get them... one at a time. It's "viruses" or "viri" not "virii".

That beats a coworkers computer I cleaned a few months ago. She had 482 instances of infection. So far that's a record for work. Right now I am working at home on a personal system for a guy at work and he's had dozens of malware, etc. but I am cheerily cleaning it all up for him and optimizing everything for the $50 I am charging him. Sometimes I gotta love this field.
