Whoa, this is weird!

Do you have VNC installed on that box?

yeah, that's how I got the screenshot. I did a remote reboot from my desktop's commandline and now it says it's installing updates and shutting down.

No big deal, just thought I would share the weirdness.

Yeah VNC will do all kinds of weird stuff like that on 2003 servers. I thought they had finally fixed VNC, but maybe not.

This is the latest version of UltrVNC which we have installed on hundreds of servers and workstations and I've never seen anything like this before. I do know vnc has problems on Win XP with fast user switching due to the way XP manages the display, but last I heard this was unfixeable from vnc's end.

Now the server seems to be stuck on installing update 1 of 2. I may have to kill it.

Yeah, don't know what to tell ya 🙂 I've seen VNC cause numerous issues exactly like this with RDP on 2003 only. But it seems to be pretty random, not affecting all 2003 machines, or not affecting a machine all the time.

But it is definitely VNC, I think they had something on their site about it.

The best (or worst) named VNC client has to be Chicken of the VNC (har har) 😉

check your color depth when using vnc or remote desktop.

If you are assuming that it just "looks" greyed out, this is not the issue. Looking at the console itself, it was definately greyed out and would not accept any inputs. I just had to use VNC to get the screenshot.

No I was just speaking of the colors...

Every piece of software has its flaws on some level; thankfully this one is just a small one, though probably annoying.
