Whoa, they *DO* exist!!!

Check it out. My dad bought this lil' hummingbird feeder a few years ago, and would fill it with some sugar diluted in water. He didn't know what he was doing, so naturally we never saw a single hummingbird, and my dad just figured there weren't any in our area.

Fast forward to today, and we see some hummingbird solution mix at Wal*Mart. We bought it, filled up the feeder, and BAM! Can't get the little buggers to leave!!! They'll even hover and feed if folks are out on the porch!

My camera skills are lacking, and I took this shot through a dirty window with digital zoom on, but here's an idea of what they look like

I used to have a bunch of hummingbrids in my back yard. Their hearts beat like 200 times per minute or something insane like that.

Hummingbirds are fun. Generally they aren't scared of anything because they can get from here to 500 feet over there --> in about 200miliseconds. The ones that hang out at night are great too, when I'm out shooting hoops at 1 in the morning there's always a few poking at the flowers around the driveway, I can walk right up to them and hold out my hand and they'll just start sniffing my fingers and buzzing around my head.

Ironically, I've been to Hawaii four times and I've never seen a hummingbird, yet I've seen about half a dozen in my backyard of the years here in California.

Varies depending if they're flying or resting, but can go as high as 1200 iirc. Nice pic, more please

I have them in my backyard in California too. My cats used to chase them, until they figured out that the birds are faster and smarter. Now they just watch.

Thanks for the picture. I don't think I've ever seen any. Don't think there are any in Alaska. We just have moose, bears, foxes, etc. wandering around in our area.

Most likely, since their frame of reference is different than ours. When you ride in a car going really fast the other cars around you look like they're not moving if they go the same speed.

hey, its a good idea to build a little tiny cup of clorox or something or bleach into the top of the feeder, cause you dont want ants crawling up the thing to try to get to the sugar water.. atleast thats what my dads father in law did.

They are awesome, I've got a feeder outside my house and there are hummingbirds here sometimes.

One day my old girlfriend said "OH look at the cute humming bird!" (this was out in front of her house.)

I said, "Uhh, humming birds don't have antenna ...''

It was a BIG FREAKING MOTH, but it moved as fast as a humming bird. Looked quite a bit like one too.

Well except for the antenna.
