Always get Lite On, you can do a firmware update on their single layer 8x to make it dual layer. Lite On is one of the cheaper and by far better drives out there.

which lite on?

Might flash it to a 2510 sometime 🙂

They are cheap because the 2510 is just a 2500 with firmware flash, IIRC.
So it's the same tech, so same cost.

Yeah I own the 2500A and read up on that, though I guess it's only somewhat confirmed right now? At least NEC is trying to claim it won't work, but apparently some people are claiming success.

How's that work ? Dual layer burns both sides with or without flipping the disc ? If you have to flip the disc, I don't know how the hardware is any different (just the disc would be). If you don't have to flip... then I don't see how a single layer burner, with a firmware flash, could possibly write to the OTHER side.

Heh, I just got an Optorite DD0405 single layer drive for $68... though it was given to me so technically it was free. I don't care though, I'm happy with ~5gig backups.

Do you need special software to do the dual layer burning?
I think, but "special software" is covered by Nero, which comes with the drive. You can also download a free upgrade from their site, and I'm fairly sure several other burning programs can handle dual-layer burning.
It doesn't come with the drive that's on sale. It's an OEM drive. No software.

Dual layer != dual sided. Dual layer = 2 layers of data on one side of the disc, read by different wavelength lazors.

Oh hehe.

Technically, you can have dual layer dual sided DVDs for 4 times the regular storage. Technically...

Oh well.

Just Got one today, but 30 bucks after mail-in-rebates so I'm not complaining

As tempting as it is to buy one of those, I'm waiting until the media are cheaper and the drives are faster...I'd prefer $1/disc or $2/disc with 4x or 8x rather than $5/disc and 2.4x.

i've known about it for a while...just idn't know about any media out for it, so i didn't see any point to it

Same with the NEC 2500... but why not spend the extra $5-10 and get a real one anyways? I had a Lite-On and it sucked, it was not good with media, only a few worked well, my NEC has no problem with any media Ive used. Im a big fan of Lite-On and own alot of drives by them.... but NEC out did them this time.

I'll also be waiting for Pioneer's All-format Dual-Layer burner. I like me some DVD-RAMs!

Thats what i'm waiting for; That or a dual format dual layered DVD writer

yea its more or less confrimed. burned discs on any drive are iffy on total compatibility, only time will tell considering we dont have much to test with anyways..

as for layers, all dvds..well almost all decent dvds are dual layer. thats why warez boys cant really make perfect copies onto normal single layer dvdr. and as said already, dual layer media will cost a lot for a while..so no rush.

and this has been out for atleast a few months.
