Out of curiosity I popped a PS2 game into my DVD-ROM to see how big the game was. I looked and it Tekken Tag only took up 602MB. Saaaaayyyy.... sounds like it's on CD and not DVD.... I popped it into my CD-R and read it just fine. i may have to make a back up to see how it works. I wonder what are the chances it will work without a mod chip. I'm not holding my breath but things look good.

you can't do it without patch, modchip and swap. People were already pirating them before the US system came out. Very few games are actually on DVD. I think (don't quote me on that) if the disc is blue it is just a plain old CD. Silver - DVD.

Caught me off guard. I would think that Sony would at least release it in DVD format just to throw people off. A blank DVD-RAM (Is that the right format?) costs about $30 and requires a $400 burner. I probably doesn't cost anymore to stamp a DVD over a CD. Bad choice by Sony IMHO.

BTW: Tekken Tag has a purple bottom.

Burn it, for 25-75cents (cost of a CDR) you may save yourself a few hundred $ on games. ;)

Ya know...cuz...uhhh....you may scratch your original copies...yeah...that's it.

All blue PS2 discs are CD-ROMS, and all silver ones are DVDs. Madden2001 is a cd, SSX is a CD, but Fantavision is a DVD. Fantavision is a first party game so I guess that's why they used the DVD format. That game could probably be done with less than 100 Megs.

Madden on the other hand, I thought would be a DVD, go figure.

Maybe they put it on CD to save money (putting on cd costs less than putting on DVD?)

Correct me if I am wrong here...

You can't even read DVD-RAMs or DVD-RW in normal DVD drives.

BTW, all games at japanese launch (and I think North America launch too) were in cd format. Just because it costs a bit more to make DVDs than CDs, so developers save a couple of nickles.

I think the deal was that it depended on the size of the game. Obviously, if it wouldn't fit on a single CD, they go with a DVD.

DVD+RW can which is sony's 3.7 GB format can be read on exisiting DVD drives, it's not out yet though

Most of the PS2 American launch games are on CD, but fantavision is on DVD. If you guys are familiar with fantavision, you'll know it can be done in LESS than 100 Megs. But there's some video playback involved, maybe that's MPEG2 and could take up a lot of space.

The Dreamcast uses a "GD-ROM", capable of storing up to 1g of info. However, very few games (like 6, or so) use over 700mb.

I would think that the ratio would be the same for PS2 games. Very few (at this point) would require more than 700mb.

Look people, this pirating stuff has to stop. I used to d/l these warez games and such, but i realized that it was really pointless. Support the gaming companies and buy the damn game. PC game prices have really been going down lately too, NHL 2001 was like 25 bucks. No one Lives Forever was only 26 bucks too. So, just buy the games.

The interesting thing is that for certain Dreamcast games, they intentionally bloat the game (custom sound and video files that take up extra space and other junk like that) up so it won't fit on a single normal CD. Certain bootlegs of DC games that used to take up 2 CD's retail now only take up a single CD.

Sony should be doing the same types of things if they have any sense.

actually if they had any sense they would of eliminated the ability for the system to play audio cds, that and that alone is what caused the dreamcase to be pirated, not the fact that the Hackers were able to rip the game data off the gdroms, but because the system has to read regular cdroms to play audio cds, it caused the whole dreamcast piracy thing. if the system could not play back audio cds, then the ripped data would of been useless because the system wouldnt be able to read the cdr.

same goes for sony whos making the same mistake times 2

1. for the same reason as the dreamcast
2. for putting game data onto regular cds.

give it a year, the system will be cracked and then sony can boast how they have sold a bajillion systems even though software sales are only going to be a fraction of the amount, how come playstation games cant keep up to the numbers that n64 does in retail even though theyve sold over 70 million systems...gee wonder why!!

Actually 95% of Dreamcast games were under 640 megs. It wasn't until 6 months ago Sega put out a mandate that every game has to be OVER 700 megs. This was because an illegal boot disc was leaked into the public.

This boot disc is what the testing department (QA) used to test alpha/beta version of games. What we did (I used to work for Sega of America QA dept) was put a boot disc into the DC and after the initial boot it would allow you put pretty much ANYTHING into the system. We regularly got revisions on either burned CDRs or GD-Rs. Yeah they had a GD-R burning machine :) An iso of this boot disc was some how leaked and people just ripped the GD-ROM info and made it burnable onto a CDR.

After a couple of month (around September) the "warez" group that released the ripped copies of the games stopped. Rumor has it that Sega paid them an xxx amount of money to stop. I doubt it though.

I just got a game called Cannon Spike and it's only 200 megs. Arcade type games like blitz 2000 don't take much space even on a cd.

fivespeed, i doubt they would pay them money. I mean, if they could find them to pay them, I would imagine that they would have them arrested, not pay them! ;)

It's called a boot disc because it boots up the system. It pretty much disables any copy protection scheme the system checks for. We pretty much used retail DC's to test the games. If they used modded DC's to test games there's a possiblity of a bug showing up on a retail DC and hadn't show up on a modded DC.

I found the old webpage that had the news what happened. The group was called Kalisto and here's what the site had posted:

Many people have been asking me if that Kalisto has really left because of Sega offering them stock options. Well all I got to say is that Kalisto has to be lying, they may of said it personally but its just an excuse. The thought of Sega Paying off Pirates to stop them from Releasing more games is pure nonsense. There are many rumors on why Kalisto has left the DC scene the most used is that Sega has new protection on there games and they simply couldn't crack them no more. But I personally think its that DC ripping has taken an effect on them and they are tired of people bothering them and calling them phonies.

So the old rumor that I remember is false, or at least that's what the site says. Sorry I don't keep up with that scene anymore.

hehe... no no no, I didn't "leak" the boot disc :) It wouldn't be worth it, that was the coolest job I ever had. Sat on my but all day playing video games, although the last month I was there I had to play World Series 2k1 for 8 hours straight <shiver>, that game sucked sooo bad.
